guys and gals,

just found this site. been holding off buying a diamond for years for the dear wife. Just didn't want to get fooled with all the grades, cuts, certificates, etc. Learning a little bit each year. This should be the year that I buy though. 10yr anniversary.

found a couple of diamonds at jamesallen and whiteflash. looking for something in the 1.8 to 2.1ct range. I know there's a big price jump at 2.0ct.

is this one really worth it?

keeping it under $50k would get ideal.

Can you please give us your thresholds for color and clarity?

Whew, I wouldn't ever pay for IF clarity. VS1 and higher is totally clean to the eye and 10x loupe.

At Whiteflash, they specialize in top cut diamonds, so cut first, then color and clarity. The only WF diamond you posted was the one A Cut Above. I don't look at their (or anyone else's) virtual diamonds. And with your budget, you certainly can afford a well cut diamond.

This is the diamond I recommend for you:

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3667378.htm

It is gorgeous and will definitely appear larger than a 2.0 ct stone. But if you really want under 2.1 cts here's another beauty:

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3653231.htm

These are both better cut than the two you linked from James Allen.

I would choose the 2.3 ct F VS-1 ACA in a heartbeat!

Wow!

Those are 2 very nice examples. Thank you for your recommendations. I take it that purity is not as important as the "hearts and arrow" cut?

2.3ct is kinda pushing it "mentally." Wife's finger is a size 5.5, so I don't need to be that big.

I was thinking E or F for color.

For clarity, I thought IF was important, but it seems from the above two replies that it's not so important when compared to the cut.

With the 2.368ct ACA diamond, does it matter that the girdle says "thin to medium"? Does it imply that it has variations from thin to medium or is uniform for the diamond?

Thanks

Yes, thin to medium is very acceptable. ACAs are in a category called superideal cuts, or the top of the ideal cut range. They are also called true "hearts and arrows" cut, because they are cut in that style, but with highest precision. My diamond stud earrings are ACAs.

VS1 is high clarity, so you are not sacrificing a thing. In fact, it is my personal favorite clarity for a ring, because it is super clean yet I am not overpaying for something invisible!

I am old ;)) , but I wear a size 5.5 and my diamond is 2.3 cts. Mine is a tiny bit smaller in diameter than that one due to being a different style cut. But maybe this will help you see the size to decide if it is too much or not.

thank you for the pic.

2.3ct seems to be a good size then!

Now the big question: is that 2.3ct whiteflash ACA the best for the price? i.e., do I shop around? I stopped at tiffany's last year and they didn't have any "ideal-scopes, aset, etc." Obviously, their prices are much higher than whiteflash. I do go into NYC quite often. How does one navigate the 47th diamond district?

You can find cheaper prices but I doubt you will find a super ideal cut stone - one that can be proven on paper or with scopes and not just based on someone's word for it - any less expensive. Unless you are well educated about diamonds or have an appraiser friend to take with you, I wouldn't even attempt to shop at random in the diamond district.

My suggestion would be for you to contact Whiteflash by phone and speak with them about the stone. They can answer any questions you may have - even regarding pricing. Their stones are very well cut - I seriously doubt that you will be disappointed!

I will look and see if I see any comparable stones. Whiteflash just usually has the best selection (more stones to choose from) and often better pricing.

Here is a good price comp for a comparable superideal cut stone. It is F VS1 2.13 cts (8.25mm) and $47,500 wire price.
The F VS1 2.36 (8.5mm) Whiteflash stone is $45,268. As you can see, Whiteflash is pretty competitive on pricing, too.

http://highperformancediamonds.com/shop/f/HPD7869/?shop=yes

That's really the closest (and only) stone I see to the specs you want. Most vendors carry fewer colorless, high clarity stones. I looked at the other 4 superideal cut vendors. These stones are higher cut quality than Tiffany carries.

BTW, what setting are you interested in for this potential diamond? What will be your budget for the setting?

The setting will be a platinum solitaire, Tiffany style.

thanks

Good choice--it's a classic that never goes out of style! I have a WF ACA set in their platinum knife-edge solitaire (see pic below). Others have chosen the Vatche U-113 6 prong solitaire which is a popular setting here on PS. Good luck in your search! :wavey:

I was writing while m-2-b posted! My diamond is in the Vatche U-113. And as m-2-b just said, she has hers in the WF version of the Tiffany solitaire!

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/6-prong-solitaire-engagement-ring-by-vatche-4567.htm

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/classic-tiffany-style-knife-edge-solitaire-engagement-ring-734.htm

I would say that the main difference is that the Vatche shank (band) is slightly thinner.

Ask for either ring to be made in 95% platinum/5% ruthenium OR 90% platinum/10% iridium. These are the harder platinum alloys and will show fewer scratches.

ok, guys and gals...

still looking. Gave up on Tiffany's. Lucida cut is nice, but still too expensive.

So, now going for a true hearts or ACA 1.8 to 2.1. There was a whiteflash 1.8ct F VS1 for $26k that I just missed as the missus was deciding on which setting. I'm sure another will pop up.

Anyway, that is my price range. $25k to a little over $30k.

What about this james allen one? it's a D stone, true hearts. BUT, it has blue fluorescence
