So I bought my OEC knowing it had strong blue fluor (very exciting) and only today did I finally get a UV light. It was so difficult to find one where I live...checked all the usual suspects and ended up buying a semi-expensive one from a pet store! Why a pet store? Apparently they sell them so people can check for cat urine stains around the house. Really, I had no idea. But I was desperate to see the fluor in full force. So worth it.

Turns out not only it the stone has strong blue fluor but it also has phosphorescence! At first, we thought our eyes were playing tricks on us but after several tries, the phosphorescence keeps coming through. I have to 'charge' the stone under the UV for several minutes, then shut it off and the phosphoresces (?) for a fair while. I can't get a picture of it, it's too faint.

You'll notice the stone is brighter in some pics and less so in others, I was experimenting with how close to hold the light to the stone. I 'think' some of the side stones MIGHT be have fluor but I'm not totally sure.

Anyway, hope you enjoy these, it was a fun photo shoot. :)

This is embarrassing. I'm suddenly having trouble uploading pictures! Will keep trying.

This is a pic with the light held further away.

I want! I want so bad!

Thanks for the pics. That is AWESOME!

It's rather anti-climatic posting numerous times in your own thread before anyone has replied, lol!

I'll just continue with the pics. This one is taken through my loupe, you'll see the light reflecting in the glass of the loupe. Unfortunately SO is not home right nw, otherwise I would have a photography assistant to help me with a more ideal set up! ;)

Last one. :)
It really just tickles me to no end to admire my diamond in a new light, hardeehar!

I already commented, but I want to say again how super cool this is!

This cool >>> 8-)

This. Is. Awesome. :appl:
I'm so envious! It looks like most of your melee have fluor too.

With the pet store thing, I was thinking maybe people need to find their pet scorpions in the terrarium before opening the hatch, but cat pee? Huh. I thought one would be guided by the smell.

Awww thanks ladies! It's really fun to experiment taking these Fluor photos.

janeSmith - I'm not sure if the melee has Fluor or if it's because I was holding the light rather close in some of the photos and it's just reflecting the black light.

Fwiw, the UV light is by Whisker City and is called 'The Stink Finder'.

omg maccers it's beautiful!!! and I see fluor in your sidestones as well?? I'm glad you finally were able to get your hands on a UV light!!

This is lovely, I adore fluoro in stones!

Maccers that is soooooo cool! I would love to have a stone with fluorescence. Beautiful ring, too

maccer, awesome pics!! Now, that's a fun game to play. And interesting find with the lamp! :))

Cool! Thanks! Does it show a blue hue in the sun? Love blue fl. there is a thread under Show me the Bling! where you can post your blue fl. pics.

I bought my UV light in the flashlight section of Walmart...$10...they only had 2 in stock though. They look like a small flashlight and they are used for many things. Interesting.

Groovy. Nice photos.

Fluorescence and phosphorescence are fascinating. If you have access to a tripod-mounted camera with a nighttime exposure setting and shutter countdown you may be able to capture the phos effects.

Your stain detector probably has a wide bulb, making it a challenge to test the sidestones individually. For smaller applications a counterfeit detector's penlight with longwave output from 365-400nM is handy. So you could ask the TSA agent checking your passport to test your diamonds...but I wouldn't advise it :saint:

It would also be interesting to see if there's any different reaction under Shortwave UV, which is used for germicidal as well as other mineralogical applications.

Thanks for all the nice comments!

Ariel - I haven't noticed a blue hue in my stone in direct sunlight, it just looks extra white to me when I'm outside. And thankfully, no hazyness or milkyness at all. I'm going to look for the Fluor thread and add my pics. I know it's a topic that gets asked about a lot.

Thanks John, I don't have a tripod but it would be easy enough to get my hands on one. I'd really like to figure out how to show the phosphor, it's a very strange phenomenon. The first time we noticed it, it appeared orange to us but when I took the pics last night, it wasn't reading orange instead it was just a glowing effect that is subtle. At first, it feels like your eyes are playing tricks in you, trying to understand where the source of the glow is coming from. And yes, the detector has a long bulb so I can't focus it anywhere. I might try using black construction paper to cover some of the lamp.
