Hello everyone, I want to thank all of you for contributing to this site- Last week the BF and I went ring shopping in the wholesale district of Chicago. After reading this site, I really learned so much about what I wanted in a stone, and what I should be looking for.
The crowning moment was when I was looking at an asscher cut, and commented to the BF that the windmills seemed skewed, and the jewler said "what do you mean, windmills?" heh.

Anyway, I''ll eventually post pics up- once the proposal is done (hopefully soon!)
Unfortunately, the asscher cut diamond itself is not the peak of perfection, since I ended up with an estate piece. Strmrdr would probably call it a barker, since the table is a tad big, and the cut is not the best- but it wasn''t possible in our budget to change out diamonds. Maybe in 10 years ;)
specs- 1.47, I color, VS1, average cut. (asscher)
platinum ring with single cut diamonds around edge, and 2 triangle dark blue sapphires.... it''s really impossible to explain, so I''ll try to draw a picture and upload it.
total cost $6000
But the overall effect was exactly what I wanted, and I am really happy with it. It''s funny though, the 2nd choice was also an asscher, of much better quality (.94, E, Sl1, ideal) but the ring didn''t feel "right." It was beautiful, but this one is my ring.

Anyone else out there with similar conflicting thoughts?

Also...I wanted to recommend an appraiser in downtown Chicago. She was worked fast, patient, professional, and even showed us the tiny crystals in the diamond in 30x maginfication, and then again in 10x so we could identify our diamond in the future. The best part was that she took my appointment two days before, so I didn''t have to wait a week or 2.
Our insurance agent commented that this was the best appraisal he had ever recieved- she had faxed it to him in a matter of hours, and it was extremely detailed.

Heidi Harders- GIA certified appraiser
(312) 578-0440 55 E Washington St, Suite 1007.

The store owner told us that she had even appraised pieces for the Field Museum and taught classes there. We were originally recommended to Richard Drucker (in the pricescope list, but recommended by a local trusted jeweler) but the store''s return policy was for credit only, and they wanted the assistant to go with us to the appraiser. Richard Drucker''s office was the one who recommended Heidi.
Thanks!

congrates!
if it makes your heart go pitter patter then it matters not one bit what I think of it.

:) thanks Storm... your approximate specs were what I took with me when I figured out asscher cut was THE shape for me. And the brillance (or less brillance) was what made me reconsider the ring for 2 full days... but in the end, my heart did pitter.

But seriously, thanks for the education, it helped me quite a bit.

Congratulations!!! If it spoke to you as Storm says, I''m sure it''s gorgeous. I hope you can post pics for us soon.
