Hi there,

I am the "engagee" in this case
9.gif
and I always have wanted an emerald cut. But I remember once going to or local jeweler where we have all of our jewelry made once and, upon inquiring about an emerald cut, they explained to me that it''s the "least brilliant" diamond cut but still very beautiful (I''ve since done my research and know WAY more about that stuff now, but I still really like the emerald cut and know it can be quite beautiful). Although I love the look of an emerald, there''s no denying how much I LOVE the fire in a round or princess cut. I just like that long lean look to a stone. So I was trying to find an alternative.

I did some more research and it is DIZZYING how many cut options I have just in the "long stone" department.
Here''s an example of some of the cuts I''m looking into:

Jubilee
Radiant
Gabrielle emerald
Adura
Aleya
Angelina
Curvex
Barocut***
Crisscut***
Princ
Royalcrest
Spring
Tycoon*****
Ashoka*
Caressa
Divine?
Dahlia?
Blaze?
Baquillion?
cleopatra marquise
astrea (pear)
aurora (marquise)
baroness
dubai
duchesse
electra (oval)
emerella
flame
kiss
regent
scintilla (pear or marquise)
victorian
andre (marquise)

I think the problem is that I had my heart ''set'' (no pun intended) on emerald cut and after doing some research I''m now willing to lean towards long oval, marquise, or pear shapes as well. Even a "longer" or more rectangular square cut would be great (hence, the Jubillee - I looked at a TON of photos in the ring gallery and there was no mistaking a jubillee diamond - i could guess that a diamond was a jubillee before even being told!).

So, I''d like to ask for some opinions or testimonies about the cuts mentioned above (especially the "branded" cuts). I need some guidance!!!

TIA,
Chelsea

(P.S. - right now my top four are looking like tycoon cut, barocut, crisscut, and prince cut, respectively)

Welcome!

Emerald cuts may not perform in quite the same way as a round brilliant for example, but if the cut is good, they can be STUNNING diamonds, as many of our EC loving ladies here will tell you! A well cut EC will have a different look, but can still be gorgeous in it's own right. So if that is where your heart lies, then maybe at least look at some from an expert vendor such as the ones listed below.

You can't judge an EC by the numbers, so an expert vendor who has in house stones, or can source you a good EC is invaluable. Also they can email you pics of the diamond, and also ASET images which are very useful for evaluating the cut. So I would say to at least look into these shapes if they are what you love first!

As to the other diamonds you have listed, I am not familiar with all of them, but they do offer very different looks in some cases. A radiant could be a good alternative if you decide against the EC.

Here is a tool you may find very useful, a handy shape selector which you can play with to get an idea of different length to width ratios. Also what size diamond are you considering?

Personally I would stay away from the branded cuts unless I came across one at a substantial discount. You typically pay a premium for what to me is a botched look. Not to say that no one can improve upon standard cuts, but often it looks like they threw in some extra facets, slapped a new name on it, and charged more. If you ever plan to upgrade, that may be a real issue also.

I love emerald cuts, though I currently wear a pear. Pear shapes have as much brilliance as a round IMO. If you want a rectangular stone with more of the crushed ice look, search for a long radiant.
