Hi guys,

I am a new member to the site and have until now never posted in a forum before! Thank you in advance to all advice and suggestions.

I am looking to propose to my girlfriend within the next two weeks. We currently live in Dubai and have visited a well reputed jewelers who designed a ring as per her specifications. After exchanging information with a jeweler back home in the U.K they have advised me against buying it here. Although financially I feel that I could get a similar or better ring at a slightly less budget!

I am looking at Oval design with Halo and have been offered these 3 diamonds. I would greatly appreciate your input on which ones are best.

GIA 1.23ct G-VVS1
CUT = GOODX2
POLISH = EXCELLENT
SYMMETRY = VERY GOOD
FLOURESCENCE = FAINT

GIA 1.21 G-VS1
CUT = GOODX2
POLISH = EXCELLENT
SYMMETRY = VERY GOOD
FLOURESCENCE = NONE

GIA 1.02 G-VS2
CUT = EXCELLENT X3
POLISH = EXCELLENT
SYMETRY = VERY GOOD
FLOURESENCE = NONE

http://s3-ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/hkfauna/Vision360.html?d=170299-219&sd=50&z=1&v=2&sv=0

Also if anyone has suggestions or advice on buying here in the U.A.E that would be great....

Thanks again

Oh sorry about that! This was the links that the jeweler has sent to me. Is there something more specific I should ask for so you can see?

You should open the links, Right Click on the pictures and save them to your desktop or your chosen folder, then use the Upload a File button underneath the reply box at the bottom of this thread.

You should post the GIA numbers and also the HCA scores for each (using the tool in the tool dropdown menu at the top of the forum), as that will help you and the forum assess them.

Does the jeweller have a website with the stones listed on it? And/or ASETscope and IdealScope images?

Thank you for this! As mentioned this is all very new to me barring a couple of Youtube videos. I will get onto this now.

The first and second stones have some potential, although I would wait for the oval experts to chime in. The third stone has some bow-tie effect going and I do not find the stone as appealing. Can you please share the dimensions of each stone? Also, what is your budget?

What are the sizes (hxw mm) on the stones? The first two have pretty thick girdles which can use up carat weight with nothing to show for it.
Can you give prices in USd?

HCA is for round stones only so dont run them through HCA tool (ohshinny probably didnt realize they are ovals).

Welcome to Pricescope Chaz. GIA does not give a cut grade for this shape. Can you ask the seller what those cut assessments are based-on? Specifically, are they generated from (a) ray-tracing (b) ASET or other reflector-analysis (c) proportions guidelines (d) their own visual observations? And I agree with the others. More measurement details would be helpful.

Sorry for the delay guys - I was waiting on some answers back from the Jeweller! So since my first post the 3rd Diamond has now gone so at the moment I have only these two to share with you. Ideally for the whole ring itself I am looking to spend 10K USD including the ring design etc.

Thank you again for all your help so far.

Hi John,

Thanks for the advise. I am waiting on a few more options from Jeweller today and will ask how they are making these assessments. I will post again later once I have more options.

Thanks again

Not an oval expert by any means, but the G VS2 has a knot in it pavilion side. Which would generally worry me. I've spent the last 5 mins trying to find it in the video that your jeweller sent you the link for and I can't see it.

The VVS1 stone is a lot cleaner (as you would expect).

Hi guys,

So I decided to visit a few more jewellers here in Dubai yesterday and were offered these two diamonds which I would like your input with.

GIA Report Number 6241820201
GIA Report Number 2267089612

I have had some more Diamonds from the Lady in the UK but as before the links are not great and there are no GIA certificates. I am not sure how true this is but she asked the " source " to remove them from the market to give me time to decide which one to go for. That along with being so new there is no possible way for me to get the Certificates. Does this sort of thing really happen?

Anyway here are the links for you to offer up advice.

GIA, 1.01 F-VS1 oval CUT - GDX2, POLISH - VG,SYMMETRY - G, FLOURESENCE - N MM 8.22X5.58 http://s3-ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/hkfauna/Vision360.html?d=170239-229&sd=50&z=1&v=2&sv=0

GIA 1.01 G-VS1 oval CUT - GDX2 POLISH - EX, SYMMETRY - G, FLOURESENCE - N MM 8.12X5.51 http://s3-ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com/hkfauna/Vision360.html?d=173139-1497&sd=50&z=1&v=2&sv=0

Thanks again guys

Based on the videos alone, the GIA 1.23ct G-VVS1 is in my opinion best, and the GIA 1.01 G-VS1 also has potential.

Buying uncertified stones would be a big no-no, if that's what is being suggested by your UK jeweler.

GIA Report Number 2181499762 is for the G-VVS1. I believe that the LxW ratio of this particular stone maybe low? But then again I am no expert.

Thanks again

So after me asking again they have provided the Report numbers!

See what you guys think

L/W = 1.34 is perfectly respectable for an oval. But my position is that when it comes to L/W and shape factors, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people prefer a low ratio, some people prefer a high ratio. If you're considering a halo setting, please be aware that the L/W ratio of the halo outline will always be lower than the L/W of the center diamond.
