Let's talk about names!

@lyra, "which one is which?" I can see how that would be annoying! Btw I saw you are getting a new feathered friend...congrats!

@elle_71125, Danielle is such a pretty name but Elle is very in vogue, so lucky you for having a stylish nickname. Amber Lee Marie is very sing songy so I agree on that one.

@1ofakind, that's a bit of a problem but you could always call and ask to speak with Andi "with an I" or Andy "with a y", as long as they wouldn't get offended. Funny that they are a husband and wife, so many people in the world and the two same sounding name people find each other.

I was named after a flower. My mom also preferred the meaning of the name too. I was almost Deirdre but she said the meaning of the name was sad and she didn't want me to be sad. I wish she had stuck with that lol. My middle name is a last name. She stuck me with the last name of her male OB. I often want to change both names or at least the middle but it feels disloyal so I haven't yet.

Are there any Veronicas here? I love the name Veronica and do not know any in real life. If I could have chosen any make growing up OT would have been Veronica. :)

My first name is Danielle. It was a popular name when I was born but it doesn’t really feel like me. Though when I hear it from my husband‘s lips...*swoon*.
I had no nickname growing up because I absolutely refused to let people call me Dani. Hell to the no! In eighth grade my friend used the last 4 letters of my name and my nickname was born...Elle (pronounced “Ellie“ not “L”). Pretty much everybody calls me Elle these days.

Fun fact, my mom wanted to name me Amber Lee Marie. I thank the sweet Lord every single day that my grandma intervened on that one.

Beautiful name for a beautiful person ❤️

@missy, maybe your mom feels that Melissa is such a great name why shorten it...also the poodle thing lol! I wouldnt think of Missy being a poodle name at all. Melissa is a pretty name though.

Thanks Stephanie. I’ve always liked your name. Growing up I had a dear friend whose name is Stephanie. She has a twin sister whose name is MaryAnn. Also a lovely name.

In the Jewish religion the children are named after a deceased beloved relative. I was named after my dad's grandmother. Her first name started with an M. Miriam. That is my hebrew name.

My dad wanted to name me Melanie and my mom wanted Melissa. Of course my mom won. LOL. My mom hates my nickname missy (she says it's a poodles name  ) but almost everyone (but my mom and my DH) calls me Missy. Melissa seems so formal to me and anyway everyone just calls me Missy. I hate the nickname Mel so no one calls me that. My mom calls me Melissa and my DH calls me sweetheart, booby, darling etc. If he is talking about me to someone else he refers to me as Missy.

My middle name is after an English actress. No clue why and now when I ask them they're like that isn't true we didn't name you after her but they did. I remember clearly the conversation years ago about this. LOL so funny how now they deny it. Not sure why they deny.

My sister was named after my mom's grandmother (who was alive when I was born) and her Hebrew name is Deborah and everyone calls her Debbie. So her Hebrew name and American name match much better than mine.

I like the name Melissa - I prefer the more formal names.

I hate my name, but it could’ve been worse. My father was a fan of classical Greek names, so wanted to call me Ariadne or Persephone! My mother wanted to call me Deirdre (pronounced DearDree here, rather than the US Deardra). In the end when my father went to register my birth he chose a completely different name.

Oddly enough, I like most feminine versions of male names, except mine. To make matters worse, my middle name is Jane, and I was always referred to as Plain Jane. I had great parents

Funny you should say that. My DH loves to tease me by “singing“ it out with a decidedly southern twang.

Beautiful name for a beautiful person ❤

Thank you!
I‘m having a hard time seeing you as a Melissa. Missy suits you so beautifully. It’s a very laid back, lighthearted name. Now I’m curious, does your DH call you by your full name or by your nickname?

He never calls me by name. Always a term of endearment like sweetheart, honey, booby etc. When he’s talking about me to someone he usually refers to me as Missy.

And I never call him Greg. Always a term of endearment also. Booby is my favorite nickname for him. ❤️

@MeowMeow, sorry I am a little lost, did your mother name you after her OB, pretty flattering for the doctor if so but I don't think I got that right.

@Austina, I'm sorry you don't like your name and the resulting nickname for your middle name. My second oldest brother is named after my father so growing up my dad was "big Peter" and my brother was "little Peter" speaking of unfortunate nicknames!

Her obstetrician that took care of her when she got emergency moved while pregnant with me. Flattering for him. I don't know if she ever told him because he was Turkish and she didn't speak German but she sure told me about him half a million times lol.

I have the male version of my name. I have a middle name as a first name. Lee.
It is a family name.
My sisters were given flowing traditional names. Pretty, unmistakable, multi-syllabic, girly.
I will admit when I was young it was always fun to show up in the flesh when the expectation through academics/writing is that they've been dealing with a dude this whole time and I saunter in as here I be8-).

Oh okay @MeowMeow, wasn't sure if I caught it right, too bad that he never knew what a great sentiment that a baby he delivered got his name, I bet he would be thrilled.

@ItsMainelyYou, I love Lee and hardly ever hear it for a woman, it's also pretty awesome that you keep them guessing :)

named after my great grandmother. all of my siblings and cousins have names from family members...

My mom picked a name out for me. The story is that her BIL, a journalist, said the name wasnt "lucky" due to the number of pen strokes? :doh:So my mom was apparently like, whatever, you pick out a lucky name. He did. It is soooo... common that I just watched a romcom where the lead actress has my name and they constantly go on about how ordinary and common it is. :wall:

I’m the third one in this thread but with bit of a twist. My name is Debora. My parents didn’t agree on a name so my dad filled out my birth certificate while my mom was asleep. He‘s a terrible speller and left the H the off the end. I did not realize it was such an unusual spelling until Spell check became a thing and always flagged my name.
As a kid I was Debbie but one aunt would not accept that spelling so all my cards and gifts were labeled ‘Debby’. As an adult I go by Deb or Debora...but I always have to correct the spelling....Thanks dad. My mom would have named me Gretchen Sue.

I so get you with the unusual spelling. I am not comfortable saying my name, but it is an unusual spelling of a fairly unusual name and nobody ever gets the spelling right. Ever. I hated it when I was younger for a silly reason. I could never get anything with my name on it. Key chains etc. (this was the 70's and 80's). Now I really like my name because it is unusual. And because I am named after a relative. Spellcheck always flags my name too. And people mispronounce it.

We know a couple who are Andy and Andi. They run a business together and there just isn’t a graceful way to call and ask for the one I need to talk to. I always feel bad about that.

Maybe this will sound silly but if you want to speak to the woman and the man answers can you just say hey Andy, may I please speak to your lovely wife? Or can you just say is Mrs. Andi there? Something like that?

Quite possible! I personally think my mom had a crush on him lmao. I just kinda wish I had a different middle name still though. I made sure my daughter had beautiful names. Her middle is for a family member but I gave it a slight twist and spelled it the French way instead of the other spelling that the family has used. Hopefully she will grow up liking her name instead of wanting to change like I do lol.

@bludiva, IMO family names are some of the best because it just shows how some names can be timeless.

@PintoBean, on the bright side of common is familiarity though. Your name probably doesn't get misspelled or "can you spell that for me".

@asscherisme, my husband has an unusual name and he would say to me "you'll never see my name on a keychain" lol! I'm glad you grew to like it though and hey you could always get a custom keychain off Etsy now ;)
