I was a little reluctant to start this thread because I wasn't sure how many people would be willing to share. Interested to know how you got your IRL first name. Are you named after someone famous, a gemstone, a relative?

If you are comfortable sharing your name, then great, if not you could just say you are named after a British actress or a flower, however much you are comfortable with.

Do you like your real name? If you would prefer to change it what would you want it to be?

My name is Deborah. It was the most popular girls name from the 50s to the 70s and I was born mid 50s. I know I wasn't named after anyone in the family but I recall that Debbie Reynolds was popular then so perhaps I and about 40 other girls in my neighborhood were named after her. My mother told me my grandmother wanted me named after my father. His name was Walter and she wanted me named Walterina. Good grief.

When I was little I was a Mickey Mouse devotee and Annette Funicello was my favorite and I was determined to change my name to Annette. My mother was not supportive, lol, but I did get my wish in a way. I was raised Catholic and chose Annette as my confirmation name.

I like Deborah but never liked being called Debbie and it especially rankled me when I reached the age of 25 and considered myself, ahem, mature. So I informed family, friends, and coworkers that I wanted to be addressed as Deborah and would not answer to Debbie.

@PreRaphaelite, Katherine is such a pretty name, elegant and refined, do you prefer people call you by your full name or do you go by Kate for short? Katherine and Larissa are so different, I'm surprised they were the two contenders.

@Matata, Walterina...oh my! Glad you got Deborah and even better that you got your wish to be an Annette too. Debbie immediately brings Little Debbie to mind!

My name is Debra.
Mom was going to name me Melanie. Dad brought some movie magazines in to Mom when she was in the hospital in labor with me.
One of them featured Debra Paget who was famous for playing Lilia the water girl in 'The Ten Commandments'.
Dad liked 'Debra', so they changed the plan.

You can probably guess mine. It's not the abbreviation, but it's pretty easy. Elizabeth.

My biological father wanted me to be Gina Marie. My mom wanted me to be Faith. They both had Elizabeths in their families so they compromised. I'm glad. But she wanted my nickname to be Bess. He said no. I am glad for it.

As an adult, I go by my full name. My parents and brother call me Beth. But they are the only ones.

I like my name. Didn't like it as a kid. I told my mom I wanted to change it to Jade when I was 12 or so.

@stracci2000, you know it's funny that your dad picked the name because that was true for me too. Melanie and Debra are both nice names so you couldn't go wrong either way.

@elizat, Gina Marie is really pretty, very Italian, I have a cousin named Elizabeth, such a pretty name but it does tend to get shortened which is a shame since the full name is so nice.

I like the name Kate but I’m rarely called that.

There are several Katherines in my family. To this day, no Larissas!

Growing up, we had Ukrainian neighbors. One of the daughters was named Larissa. I always thought it was such an exotic name.

My mom chose between Katherine and Larissa.

I hate being called Kathy. HATE IT.

But I'd hate even more being called Rissa!

Katherine is one of my favorite names - so elegant! I also love the name Kate. I had a colleague years ago who named her baby Kate as her first name on her birth certificate. I will also add that I particularly like Katherine spelled with a K, since that is my favorite letter.

I’m the third one in this thread but with bit of a twist. My name is Debora. My parents didn’t agree on a name so my dad filled out my birth certificate while my mom was asleep. He‘s a terrible speller and left the H the off the end. I did not realize it was such an unusual spelling until Spell check became a thing and always flagged my name.
As a kid I was Debbie but one aunt would not accept that spelling so all my cards and gifts were labeled ‘Debby’. As an adult I go by Deb or Debora...but I always have to correct the spelling....Thanks dad. My mom would have named me Gretchen Sue.

@1ofakind, it is a bit funny although I'm sure your mother was not amused! We will probably have many Debs of various iterations since it was such a popular name.

DH wanted to name our oldest son Carlyle, well that became his middle name but he was not in the room when I filled out the form for the birth certificate and I spelled it "Carlisle" because my only reference point was Belinda Carlisle...oops! So he got his name, just not the way he expected it to be spelled.

My name is Martha Catherine - very Irish Catholic! Martha was my Great Grandmother and Catherine is a family name that goes way back. As a child, I hated the name Martha however, as an adult I like my name, it suits me quite well, formal and straightforward. And, Martha and Mary were saints.

I have a rather old-fashioned English name, and I hated it as a kid. As I got older, I learned to appreciate that it is something less common.

I asked my dad why he named me this, and he said it was because he had a friend by the name, and I guess he liked it enough.

My name in Chinese is the worst though. People literally laugh when I tell them. My grandfather chose it; it’s some kind of precious gem no one’s ever heard of.

I was named after 2 grandfathers. One had the English spelling and one the German spelling.
I about changed my name to Stormy but my wifey talked me out of it.

@Queenie60, isn't it funny how our names (which seem to be random at times) end up suiting us so well? My mom's middle name was Martha, these kinds of names seem to be making a comeback now.

@JPie, kind of appropriate being named after a gem (in Chinese anyway) look at it like you are a rare gem :) Again another dad who picked the name, I get a kick out of that, we carry them and they get to name them!

@Karl_K, if you are named after grandfathers then you probably have great classic names that stand the test of time. Stormy is nice too but more for a cat perhaps ;)

In this case, it was probably for the best. Considering my mom’s poor English skills now, I can’t imagine what she would’ve picked all those years ago!

Their names were Carl and Karl my mom picked the German spelling hence Karl
cat? a cat? rofl!!!!

@Karl_K, well FWIW I like Karl with a "k" honestly have never seen it spelled that way before coming here.

I’m named after a car. My dad’s a car guy. I actually kind of like my name because it’s not unique but it’s not super common either. No one struggles with pronouncing my name but at the same time I only know of one other person who shares my name.

All of my social media handles are nods to my dogs though for anyone who thought my name might really be Winnie. I’m not named Winnebago (if that counts as a car) and neither is my dog!

My first name is Andrea, I usually get called Andi. I was going to be Elizabeth or Jacinta, but days before I was born, mum spotted my name and loved it.

Both of our kids had their middle names picked first, we had to choose their first names based on how they sounded with the pre-chosen middle names!

Ha, @winnietucker , thanks for clearing that up, my mind went straight to Winnebago...

My dad had a huge crush on 60's star Julie Christie. So that was his choice for me. Well he went off to fight in Vietnam, and since she was the only one present at my birth, mom decided to drop the Julie and change the spelling to Christy.
I'm very glad my first name is not Julie, as my MIL is a Julia, nicknamed "Julie". That might have been weird for my dh!

In the Jewish religion the children are named after a deceased beloved relative. I was named after my dad's grandmother. Her first name started with an M. Miriam. That is my hebrew name.

My dad wanted to name me Melanie and my mom wanted Melissa. Of course my mom won. LOL. My mom hates my nickname missy (she says it's a poodles name  ) but almost everyone (but my mom and my DH) calls me Missy. Melissa seems so formal to me and anyway everyone just calls me Missy. I hate the nickname Mel so no one calls me that. My mom calls me Melissa and my DH calls me sweetheart, booby, darling etc. If he is talking about me to someone else he refers to me as Missy.

My middle name is after an English actress. No clue why and now when I ask them they're like that isn't true we didn't name you after her but they did. I remember clearly the conversation years ago about this. LOL so funny how now they deny it. Not sure why they deny.

My sister was named after my mom's grandmother (who was alive when I was born) and her Hebrew name is Deborah and everyone calls her Debbie. So her Hebrew name and American name match much better than mine.

@winnietucker, love an unusual name and it's neat that your name has some significance to your dad being s car guy. We have a dog named Tucker :)

@Dandi, with kids sometimes the middle name is somehow less pressure but the first name has so much riding on. DH and I felt we couldn't go with anything too unusual having boys but also didn't want anything super common. Their middle names though are uncommon because DH picked them lol!

@CHRISTY-DANIELLE, I get a kick out of daughter's names after an actress their father liked, I just find that funny for some reason, it's a pretty name and also good thing your mom dropped Julie all considering!

@missy, maybe your mom feels that Melissa is such a great name why shorten it...also the poodle thing lol! I wouldnt think of Missy being a poodle name at all. Melissa is a pretty name though.

I'll jump in about my name, I am an actual Stephanie, my dad named me after Stephanie Powers, one of his favorite actresses at the time. He was also keen on Sophia Loren but I couldn't imagine being a Sophia.

DH had rather unique names picked out for our sons, our oldest he wanted to name Carlyle and the youngest Giovanni. Well I really wanted our oldest named after my mother who passed away when I was young and her name was Evelyn so he became Evan. Our youngest is named Josh after Tom Hank's character in "Big" because I just loved him so much in that movie.

So the kids became Evan Carlisle (because I didn't know he wanted the different spelling when I filled out the birth certificate) and Josh Giovanni.

I was adopted as a baby so my middle name is the one I had been assigned at birth, and my first name is a family (adoptive) name. As in my mom's name is Elizabeth, my cousin is also an Elizabeth, as are both grandmothers, and 3 great grandmothers, and 2 great great grandparents. So yeah, really inventive. Growing up my name gradually became shorter. I was Elizabeth, then Lizzy, now Liz, and eventually I assume I'll just be 'L' or 'Iz' if this shortening progresses.

@737lizakg, at least Elizabeth is a nice name and classic, never goes out of style although family gatherings might get a little confusing!

I have a unisex name, which is blah. Funny thing is, my husband's name when spoken, is also unisex. We once went to a party, and when introduced, the wife of the host said "Which one is which?". Sigh.

My first name is Danielle. It was a popular name when I was born but it doesn’t really feel like me. Though when I hear it from my husband‘s lips...*swoon*.
I had no nickname growing up because I absolutely refused to let people call me Dani. Hell to the no! In eighth grade my friend used the last 4 letters of my name and my nickname was born...Elle (pronounced “Ellie“ not “L”). Pretty much everybody calls me Elle these days.

Fun fact, my mom wanted to name me Amber Lee Marie. I thank the sweet Lord every single day that my grandma intervened on that one.

We know a couple who are Andy and Andi. They run a business together and there just isn’t a graceful way to call and ask for the one I need to talk to. I always feel bad about that.
