Let''s talk about color seen from 3rd party...

Okay, here''s the question: I know that on PS we always talk about the differences between an H, I and J...how it looks face up, from the side, etc. It seems that we talk about comparing color side by side, up close and almost in a scrutinizing fashion. This is fine, but I''m curious (because I only own a pendant and have nothing else to compare it to) how much an innocent bystander can differentiate color if they were casually admiring your ring. Will the average person be able to see warmth in an ideal cut J? Assuming we''re comparing an ideal 2ct G or H to an ideal cut 2ct J....how much difference can be seen if not under close examination??

I know there are lots of people who could probably add their experiences...so let''s hear your opinions!

I could probably see the warmth in a J stone, but I really doubt that an average person could. In addition, so much depends on lighting. Even a D colored diamond can look very yellow in some lighting and a J can look icey white in other types of lighting. I really wouldn''t worry so much what other people will think in general, I would worry about what you like and what will bother you.

I don''t know about a J, but I do have an ideal cut I and noone has ever made any comments about the warmth. Before this diamond though, I had an EGL H diamond and I only received one comment about the warmth and that was only because they placed their diamond next to mine and made a catty comment. I couldn''t really see much of a difference. On another occasion, I did put my diamond next to some one''s GIA G and I could definitely see a difference.

So my experience is that with my I, you could only tell the warmth when placed next to another person''s higher colored diamond. I think that many people get their diamonds from the mall and in that case I think it''s usually a poorly cut J.

Thanks for the reply...I''m not really worried about what people think. Like you said, the environment plays a huge part in how a stone looks. I''ve seen a friend of mine''s princess J...just casually looking I didn''t NOTICE anything that jumped out at me...just wondering if other people feel the same or if I''m one of those "non-sensitive color people". I guess I don''t really know what would bother me because I haven''t spent a lot of time with J stones or H stones...I just got to see them in jewelry stores.

I love to tell people that it's a K, but usually, they don't even know what that means. I doubt the average person can differentiate color in a diamond on somebody walking by or from a distance. I'd go with what makes you happy, and what you like to look at above all.

You''re always chiming in with great comments! I totally agree about people not understanding what a "K" is. Right now I''m about a year away from graduating from dental school...so everyone is starting to get engaged and talking about rings...since I''m the only Pricescoper (although I think I''m turning a few people onto the idea

) I''ve noticed that even the boys that are ring shopping aren''t THAT clued into a lot of things....I end up kind of "educating" some of them...kind of sad that I know so much and don''t even have a diamond ring to show!!!

By the way, we''ve actually already purchased from WF a few weeks ago...he gets it on the 24th, but I won''t be seeing it until he pops the question. The suspense is killing me!

Me too!!! I''m gonna go crazy if he makes me wait too long!!! It''s funny that I know every detail of the diamond and nothing is really a surprise. My sister thinks that it takes the fun out of it...I personally think the anticipation is wildly exciting! Not to mention that I will appreciate this diamond every day of my life because I know how much goes into buying a diamond. I think it means even more because I KNOW how great it is, you know?

To the *average* diamond shopper, a diamond is a diamond is a diamond. The 4 Cs are some vague notion that they can perhaps rattle off but probably truly know little to nothing about. Most think "cut" means "shape"; they think they understand color and clarity but have little idea (if any) what all the letters mean, and would be hard-pressed to tell you whether "D", "SI1", "VVS1" or "K" were colors OR a clarity grade! They know CARAT WEIGHT (well, *know* is probably an overstatement!) and they think they know COST. Period.

When these people (most of humanity!) see a gorgeous, well cut (and CLEAN!) stone, the LAST thing on most people's minds is what color or clarity it is. They notice size, and sparkle, and that is (IMVHO) *IT*.

Think about it, before you found PS, did you go around looking at other people's diamonds and wondering about or noticing color or clarity?! I sure didn't. Unless it was pee yellow, or had a honkin' black carbon spot dead center under the table, or the stone was dead as a doornail, all I really "saw" or "noticed" was size and sparkle (if any).

So to answer your question, I absolutely do NOT think that the casual John Q Public observer would see a clean, well-cut, J stone (graded by a reputable lab) and notice *warmth* or *color*.

I hope it''s killer!!!! I made every decision based on everything I learned here...didn''t really look at loose stones a lot. I only see rings that my friends have! They all seem nice to me, so I figured that the color wouldn''t bother me! All I care about is the SPARKLE!!!
