just curious to see thoughts about this... my gf''s already indicated that she prefers a solitaire that''s not thin, so I wonder if that''s enough info for me to make my own pick from there.

I think you can get something she will like based on that. Do you think she would enjoy helping you? Some men will buy a temporary inexpensive setting to propose and then pick the setting together after.

ETA What is "thin" to her?

This is a very personal issue (especially if you scan recent posts). For me, I was very involved. Heck, I went one further and picked out my own ring, just asked my husband for his credit card. Some girls really want to be surprised, but that wasn''t important to me. My husband was really afraid of "messing up", so he felt more comfortable just letting me pick. If your girlfriend has indicated that she just wants a plain solitaire, if you know the shape of the stone that she would like, you could go forward at this point without much more input. If, however, she wanted something more complicated, you might want to ask for more guidance. Good luck!

I am a huge fan of the whole - find out the shape, buy the BEST diamond you can, use a temp setting, and let her pick the ring to put it in.

So what do you do with the temporary ring? Buy a cheap diamond or CZ to put into its place so she can wear it to ward off guys?

Yeah, it really depends on your gal. Some women want the entire romance of being surprised with a complete ring. Control freaks, like me, would MUCH prefer the diamond in temp setting route so they could shop for the perfect wedding set at leisure.

Looks like I''ll be putting mine in a VERY simple solitaire 18k white gold setting. Plain and simple! ;)

If you know which diamond shape and color metal (yellow or white) she prefers, I think you've got enough information to make a good pick.

Another option is to have her show you what types of solitaire she likes by sending you pictures or going into stores with her. She may say she wants a solitaire, but you may like a trellis style solitaire and she does not, KWIM? Better safe than sorry. Also if you do go the temp setting route, you can put another gem in there that she likes and you can reuse the setting for a RHR.

let her pick the setting. don''t try to be a hero.
