I've only just discovered that this is coming to the big screen in December. I am absolutely OVER THE MOON! Les Mis is my favorite musical ever - I think I've seen it about 8 times now, and never hesitate to purchase front center tickets when it comes around again. I cannot possibly watch it enough. The music completely ensnares me - I spend the entire show covered in goosebumps!

This trailer convinces me that for the first time in HISTORY a movie just might do its story justice. :appl: :appl: :appl:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmvHzCLP6ug

Are there any other Les Mis lovers out there? I know I can't be alone in my elation!

Lessee...

Hugh Jackman? AWESOME! The real deal all around. He'll just chew up that role.

Russell Crowe? I hope to heck he's been taking a crash course in theatre singing. Seriously.

Anne Hathaway? Maybe. She's good at comedy singing, but drama? We shall see...

Eddie Redmayne? I can't wait really. I noticed his singing (and it WAS him singing) in The Good Shepherd - beautiful tenor.

Helena Bonham Carter? Proof that a big name can almost always overcome severe lack of talent. She is a stellar actress, but she should never open her mouth to sing. Period.

I'm excited!!!! I've been hounding my husband that we need to go the moment it opens! I usually don't like musicals that they make into Hollywood movies cuz I love the rawness d the actual live musical. But les mis might be a nice surprise. I read that instead of singing bedpans and lip syncing during the shots, they actually sang with a ear piece in their ear so that it can be realistic and believable. I am excited!!

I was pretty happy with Anne Hathaway's performance on the trailer and preview videos. However, Russel Crowe's performance appears to be severely lacking - his voice is too thin for the role of Javert. I am glad that they are prioritizing dramatic singing, instead of stage singing (which often looks hammy on screen - acting that looks goods in a stage doesn't translate well to camera close ups).

I so wanted tickets to the live musical in the city nearest us, but I missed the beginning of ticket sales and dumb scalpers bought up all the tickets!!! :angryfire: I refuse to pay much more than Broadway prices for the traveling show, so I guess I'll be stuck with the movie!!!

My daughter and I are very excited to see this movie. I think it gets here next month!

Hi,

It is my favorite show of all time as well. It was so moving to me, the tears just slipped down my face without any control.
The book was great, the play was great, and maybe the movie will be as well. I can always hope.

This is my favorite show of all time; I've know every word since my parents brought home the tape (yes, tape) after seeing the show when I was about 6.

Yes, I am SO EXCITED about this movie. I've been listening to the Original Broadway Cast Recording on a regular basis since I saw the first trailors. It probably depends on what you heard first, but I have always preferred the Broadway recording to the Originl London Cast Recording.

The cast is exciting; Hugh Jackman? Perfect. Eddie Redmayne? Perfect. He is my super-not-so-secret-crush; he is so yummy! Ann Hathaway and Russell Crowe? We'll see, but I am optomistic. HBC and SBC as Mon. et Mdm. T? I am thrilled! HBC can't really sing, but that is a role that calls for less pure vocal talent than camp and enthusiasm, and I think she can probably fake her way through it. But they will nail the characters. Eponine is a girl who has played the role on Broadway with much success, so no worries there (I LOVE EPONINE!).

One of my very best childhood friends will be back in town for the holidays, and as we learned all the words together as children, I'll be waiting to see it with her!

I posted in another thread that my family and I are going to see Les Mis on Christmas Day. I can't wait! I've seen it on stage several times, and I'm looking forward to the movie.

Ditto all your comments re: casting. I can't wait to see what SBC and HBC do with their roles! :appl:

I've shuffled my Broadway soundtrack into the car so I can get properly amped up.

SO EXCITED. I think Anne Hathaway sounded really good in the trailer! The part where she's crying and singing I Dreamed a Dream gave me goosebumps!

Russell Crowe, NOT SO MUCH. Which is a bummer because Javert has some great songs. And Amanda Seyfried was underwhelming too, but who ever likes the adult Cosette? Or is that just me? :cheeky:

I dislike Amanda Seyfried - she is so insipid and simpering in Mamma Mia. In the end, she may not do insipid, simpering Cosette too badly.

Does my dislike of both show too clearly?

I got major goosebumps. I don't think I have ever been this excited for a movie to come out. Maybe this is how Twihards feel...

 EXACTLY.

And IMHO, even though Anne Hathaway doesn't have the vocal perfection expected for the stage performance, from what I can see, she owns the dramatic movie performance for the song.

Annie Leibovitz did a photo shoot with the cast for Vogue:

Cosette...yes, well, you see how long it took for the character/casting to even be mentioned in this thread! Adult Cosette has just never captured my attention, much less my interest. Amanda will be fine, because that's all you can be as that character. Her music is pretty, though, and I hope she does well with it.

Although, as a six year old being introduced to this show, I heavily invested in the fantasy that I was young Cosette; complete with singing 'Castle on a Cloud' non-stop, while sweeping.

Yes, exactly! I think Anne Hathaway's acting skills will make up for it. Her vocals will pass, but obviously she's not on the same level as Ruthie Henshall or Patti LuPone.

I'm listening to my 10th Anniversary Concert soundtrack now and I am beyond excited. We need a nickname for hardcore Les Mis fans! Les Miserators? :cheeky:

Les Miserabids.

So, just for fun, who would you have liked to see subbed in for the casting you don't like?

I think I would have liked Emmy Rossum for Cosette; she played Christine in the newest Phantom movie and while I did think she was a little thin at times, she has the range and her voice is very pretty. She also has a bit more sass-ability than Amanda Seyfried, which might have made the role a bit more interesting.

I read that Paul Bettony had auditioned for Javert; I am biased in that I  him and am, um, less enthusiastic about Crowe, so this intrigues me. No idea if he can sing, though.

Who would you have liked to see?

Umm...Channing Tatum? As...anyone? :wink2:
