I've been a longtime lurker and am finally ready to move out of the shadows and ask my first question of the Pricescope family.....

I was given by my hubby for our 20 year anniv. a 3.56 RB stone (G,VS1) It was an estate piece set with tapered baguettes. The diamond is loose in the setting so I'm afraid to wear it and want it reset anyway. I came across Leon's name through this site and have spoken with him and feel we will work well together. Now, for the question....I am undecided on 2 ring options.... option 1. Leon's beautiful tapered french cut ring or option 2. tapered round stones (from a ring given for our 5th anniv.) I know both looks are similar, but is the expense of the hand cut french cuts worth the difference in the look I would get from the bead set rounds in a similar tapered setting? Also there is the sentimental value of using the tapered stones from the 5 yr. anniv. ring. I know I'll be happy with either option, but I would just like some opinions and appreciate the insight you all seem to have.

Thank you!

do you have photos of those settings you can post?

HI:

Has Leon provided you with "renditions" of a ring using his stones and/or with only yours? I do not think I could decide/be informed if I did not see pictures/mock-ups/CADS ( I don't think he uses these...) of either....

cheers--Sharon

I love the look of his french cut settings but I'm not sure how it would look with a round stone. Do you have any links
of a setting with a round stone? All of Leon's that I could find were set with cushions.

Rounds would also be lovely and have a nice sentimental touch.

Its really a tough call.

I really like the french cut setting with OEC's or cushions better. As far as rounds go, I would only reuse those diamonds if they are excellent quality. I'd probably save them for another project, though, and let Leon source the right stones for the shank. If the ring was for me, I would want a simple 1.8-2mm pave diamond band rather than a tapered, wider band with a stone that large. I feel like very large stones hold their own and don't need a blingy shank. Plus, I like to wear a diamond wedding band and you need to consider whether it will be too much.

Thank you for all of your advice... It is all very much appreciated!

centralsquare, canuk-gal, tyty333... unfortunately, I only have these image in my head but I will attach some similar rings I've seen. When I talked to him about the french cut with a round center, he said he thought they would look fine, although he tried to push pears, he loves that look lol!

diamondskeeper... the ring I was thinking about using is a 1+ cttw 7 stone, graduated ring (G-H, VS2) so sufficient quality for the redo...and while I agree with the smaller shank and less bling, I've had trouble with pave settings in the past (Michael B 3-sided pave band)
I may just take it with me and ask his opinion about the matching quality and my intention to not want to overpower the main stone.

here are a few rings I like....

(I know some of these photos have come from this site, sorry for not knowing who to credit)

First piece is by Victor Canera (I have a pave piece from him):

I think he made another round french cut piece... Here it is:

As for your stone I think it would look amazing in a French cut ring. It's big enough that the shank shouldn't overpower it. Please share your ring with us when its done!

BHMOM THANK YOU!!! I just keep coming back to loving those french cuts. I will keep you all posted on my progress. I might have to go to Cali, rather than NYC :D

I forgot that Victor had done a couple of rounds with french cuts. I'll revise my opinion to say that I love the french cuts enough that I might do it with a round over the round sidestones.

I would have a wedding band made as well, probably, with whatever you use for the shank of the e-ring.

I would also be very curious as to the price differential between LM and VC.

I think I like the french cut with the round also but I think I would go with much smaller french cut then in the rings that
you have posted...more like the wideness of the ring with the rounds(in the shank) but in a french cut shape so it doenst overwhelm the center stone. (does that make sense?)

I have one of the rounds- an OEC actually- with french cuts by Victor. He managed to get that lovely taper on mine (like Leon's french cut layouts for Wintotty) even with a round stone. It's much more difficult to taper the french cuts on a round than a cushion apparently. But, he got mine dead on. (My stone is a 3.39 ct OEC- you definitely need a larger round to get the taper to work- yours is plenty big enough).

Anyway, I'd totally recommend Victor for French cut settings. He gets them custom cut just for your ring- which, admittedly, I think Leon usually does too- but it took virtually no extra time with Victor, whereas Leon's cutter seems to be slower.

LGK, your ring is just lovely, I will be contacting Victor this week to get his opinion...thank you all so much for your input! :)
