So I’ve been rather quiet on here lately - manic at work these days. I’m also trying to cut down my bling spending as I made the mistake of calculating an estimate of what it will cost if both my daughters want to go to college in the U.K. I realise I’d have to sell all my jewellery and a kidney to afford it given the current college fund savings pot.
I am now rather hoping their year end report cards are really bad instead of really good and / or they decide to set up Only Fans accounts or marry footballers when they turn 18.
But I do have one project on the go.
I had two rings that I wasn’t happy with. An emerald which I couldn’t wear ever since I noticed that the side stones didn’t perfectly match in size and a yellow sapphire which I just had set into a basic temp setting because I thought I might put on Pre-Loved. I bought the sapphire by accident thinking it was unheated when it actually was heated (it wasn’t misrepresented I just make a spur of the moment purchase because the price was so good and I was collecting for my multi-coloured bracelet).
The emerald is Zambian, 2.78ct, moderate oil, and the sapphire is 3ct, heated and with a minor window, so neither stone on its own is top notch quality - although the colours on both are very nice. But I thought I could combine them to make something a bit different, and more than the sum of the parts. I also have a pair of yellow diamond earrings with detachable emerald add ons which would match with these stones quite well.
So I decided to deconstruct the two rings and make a toi et moi.
This is the initial CAD.
I wanted the baguettes to be channel set not prong set and have asked for the band to be rounded not squared off. I’ve also asked for the stones to “cross” a little more so the shank doesn’t start in the middle of each stone but slightly towards the outer side.
You will see I’ve asked for polished gold plates to be included under each stone to both make the colours pop and also to mitigate any windowing.
I’ve also asked them to add one more baguette each side on the way round so it’s min 65% diamond coverage.
Now waiting for the final CADs before proceeding.
Reusing the gold from the previous rings / offsetting the cost of the metal means this isn’t too expensive a project. I also have some store credit with my jeweller to use up.
This isn’t something I’d wear daily but I think it will go well with the earrings for the odd special occasion. It also makes something rather more fun and interesting out of two stones which aren’t in themselves ideal specs.
