What kind of magnification is necessary to see the numbers on the girdle? Thanks.

Nevermind.

It depends.
On the quality of the optics.
On your skill in using them.
On the lighting.
On your vision.
On your visual acuity.

It's not easy but I can read mine with a good 10x loupe holding the stone and the loupe perfectly still and centered, in just the right direction with respect to the light and looking slightly away from the inscription.

Newer inscriptions are easier to read since they are darker than older ones.

I learned from an astronomer the center of our retinas get worn out with age and use.
When an astronomer looks for a very faint star and can't see it she can look slightly away and the faint star will pop into view when less worn out rods and cones in the retina pick up the faint light.
You can train yourself to "see" slightly off axis.
