Hello,

First post here and no expert on gemstones so I'd appreciate any thoughts on a vintage brooch I have.

The gemstone is lab created as too perfect but I'm just trying to figure out if it's colour change sapphire or alexandrite. At first I thought it was just glass but Presidium went straight to the line between sapphires and diamonds. The colour change is very difficult to capture in the photos but I hope these give some idea:

1) daylight outdoors

It does have shades of bluish/greenish colour in daylight.

2) incandescent light. It changes to a slightly warmer and more saturated purple.

It glows emerald green along the edges under UV light, brighter and greener than in the photo but I cannot photograph it properly.

Any ideas? Thank you!

Hi, it’s likely vanadium treated lab sapphire.
The “colour change” for Alexandrite is green in daylight to purple red in incandescent.
The lab sapphire material never shows green.
There is also lab grown Alexandrite but again the colour is green to purple red.
Lab Alexandrite like natural glows orange red under UV light.
These are lab Alexandrite.

Thank you so much, very helpful!

Just another quick question for learning purposes - when you say "lab sapphire never shows green", do you mean vivid green like in your photos or even greenish/bluish hues? Mine does show some very faint greenish/bluish shades in daylight, I just cannot photograph it.

Thank you!
