I just bought a really squat pear shaped stone and when I figured out the ratio it is about the same as my cushion diamond. And it got me to thinking... ovals have a lot of similarities to cushions, but a 1:1.26 oval is considered very squat but for a cushion its considered very long. I look at my cushion and see it as being long, but compared to other cuts it really isn''t.

I''m just curious if anyone has any theories about why an oval looks "right" longer and a cushion doesn''t. With the step cuts you can go from perfectly square all the way to really long and thin.... but every cushion I''ve seen that is really long (like 1:1.6) looks ridiculous... but that''s like average for an oval. What gives?

I am risking a stupid answer here but it''s just the shape and outline of the stones. Oval and rounder shapers lends better to those ratios while a more rigid lined cushion does not. I woudl bet the very rounded cushions will look just fine in those ratios.

Hey - I''m just glad someone answered at all! :) But... what about emerald cuts... those are rigid and look good long.

It''s just weird because I like my cushion, I wanted one long... but I admit longer than this it starts to look awkward. I wondered if it was a mental thing lol

Actually I think there is always a level of preference when it comes to everything. I think the biggest difference though with the generally accepted ratios has more to do with not just length to width but you are also dealing with total surface shape. If you put an oval in a rectangle you will miss a lot of area on the corners. If you put the same ratio of a cushion in the same rectangle you will see that the corners are more covered. I don''t think it has to do as much with the straight lines on the side, but the amount of curvature on the corners.

It makes sense in my brain, so I hope it kind of makes sense to you.

it does :) I don''t know that there is a ''right'' answer, but I think it''s interesting to hear the theories. We like long emerald cuts though and they fill the corners out as well as cushions do...

There probably isn''t a right answer. I imagine the different patterns make our eyes like certain things. Funny for me is that I dislike long emeralds but I love them almost square or an asscher cut. In general I like squat everything, whether radiants, marquise, pears, cushions or step cuts. I don''t really care for ovals for that reason. It is curious to know why some shapes are considered the norm though. Wonder if there are subconscious things going on (like why babies are considered cute due to their proportions) that no one could ever explain.

It is all interesting to think about though.

I like everything to be perfectly symmetrical so I like perfect squares. I am strange .. I find that long emeralds look funny.
