How bad an idea is purchasing one?

Buying an L is not inherently or always good or bad.

You can get a much larger L diamond than a G colored one for the same price, but if you want (or the recipient expects) a colorless diamond then then buying an L is a bad idea.

A bad idea as in how? Like a bad investment? Or bad color wise? Define what bad idea means to you.

I have an L and I love it. That being said it does face up rather white due to a bit of blue flourescence. An L is not for everyone, if you are at all color sensitive you might end up really disliking it. Some cuts show color more than others and some cuts show color unevenly as well. I'm not entirely sure I'd want an L for an e-ring but mine is a right hand ring, antique and I can't even say how much I really love it.

It's only a bad idea if you are having second thoughts. If you end up buying it, enjoy it for what it is and the warmth you see in it. But don't buy it in the hopes that once you have it at home it will look like a D E or F. That's a bad idea!

Ditto, verbatim. I bought an antique diamond for a RHR that's an L-ish. It's beautiful. And I paid what I should have for it, nothing more. I'm thrilled with it.

I wouldn't necessarily surprise someone with one though and I wouldn't want one in certain shapes. But in an antique diamond-- cushion or round or an OEC-type faceted marquise or oval-- sure. In 'modern cuts'... case by case and depending on the type of piece. Rings are different than pendants or earrings.

Not to thread jack here, but Gypsy, my sister was here for Thanksgiving and finally got to see my L ring. She seriously couldn't pick her jaw off the floor. She exclaimed it was so perfect she couldn't even believe it. Now this is my highly opinionated, spare no feelings, would tell you your a$$ is fat sister...no kidding. For the price I paid for this l ring I am over the moon thrilled with it. :twirl:

Well, I CERTAINLY can't blame her... it's a freaking stunning ring! For the OP: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/photos-finally-here-3-87-carat-rose-cut.159559/ :appl:

FWIW--- I ADORE the current setting.

I just purchased pear shaped diamond earrings in an L color. Saved a lot of money as a G or H would have been twice the price. They are set in white gold and are beautiful. In most lights they face up like a J. In some lighting they show the warm buttery tone. Depending on the coloring in the room and the lighting. However, my G colored wedding ring does the same. Had them set in white gold as I felt the tint of yellow gold would make them show more of the yellow in the stone. Very happy
