Hi,

The jeweler I am working with has proposed the following diamond as my center stone, and I am extremely uncomfortable with this selection. Should I be alarmed by the size of the knot inclusion and insist she provide some other options? I'm also concerned about the depth of the diamond.

With the size of the knot and the stone graded as a SI2, it would be a no go for me. Have you actually seen the stone in person?

I haven’t seen it in person. I’m working with a jeweler in Dallas and I located in Baton Rouge. I regret taking this route because I’ve learned I have got to see these diamonds in person.

Are you stuck with this jeweler?

I think I am. I’ve paid the deposit. My setting is ready which I (think) I am pleased with but due to the fact she is trying to sell me a diamond with an obviously large knot, I’m starting to question that as well. Any advice? Insist on finding a different center diamond?

just say no to knots unless its a very rare diamond and they are on the pavilion.

Yes - tell her you don’t want that one. Why would she have collected a deposit before she had a diamond to offer you? You don’t necessarily have to see them in person IF you are provided appropriate imaging of the diamond - far more than the grading certificate.

I am confused. Settings should be made to fit the diamond, not the other way around. The setting shouldn't be done until the diamond is chosen/finalized. Can you get your deposit back?

Oh gosh. Now that you say that, that definitely makes sense. I guess she knows for sure I want a 2 carat oval and based the setting off that? Now I’m very concerned. I’m not sure what I can do at this point. I’ll be telling her tomorrow for sure to not set the diamond with the knot.

Can you gently suggest to the jeweler that you would like to select your own 2 carat oval from a vendor online and then have the jeweler set that diamond in the setting? You don't want to step on the jeweler's toes, but you'll have to live with the results.

Can you post pictures of the setting or pictures of the CADs for the setting?

Yes, here is what I have. She said the spot I circled is a reflection. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. 57B76054-E9FD-448F-86CB-37AA1DF144AC.jpeg

I think the spot you circled is the knot inclusion. Seems to match the GIA grading report. I guess it just depends on how comfortable you would be with the knot; there are many other diamonds out there to have to settle for that in my opinion.

Thats a large knot...definitely a no-go in my book! Can we ask how much she is asking for this stone?

What is your budget? We can show you what you can get on-line. If she cant find you a good stone can you use the
deposit and just pay for the setting and find a stone on your own? This is backwards of how its supposed to be done.

You can have another jeweler set a stone you purchase if need be.

Yes, $14,500 for the stone. Didn’t want to go over $16,500 for everything.

oh dear lord....I'm pretty sure what you circled was the knot, and it looks huge to me. Or maybe it's the knot + a feather? I just wouldn't be happy with this at all.

Also, even if she knows you're getting a 2ct oval, proportions and dimensions vary greatly. Settings need to be made FOR stones in order for them to fit properly. So unless she knows exactly what your dimensions are of the stone (which you haven't agreed to yet), I'm worried about why she did things in this order.

did the jeweler actually make the setting or purchase it? Seems odd she would actually make the setting before the choice of a diamond. So I'm just wondering if she purchased a setting and then went to find a diamond to fit it?

How much did you put down for a deposit? If it is less than or equal to the cost of the setting, I agree with @tyty333 to just buy the setting and look for a stone with the help of people on here.

We have moved along to this diamond incase anyone is now invested in my s#!t show. Ofcourse, it comes with a wayyyy higher price tag.

Which diamond is the one pictured?

The most recently posted picture is of the G SI1 diamond.

It looks like it has a rather large bow tie. It has a natural, an indented natural and does have strong blue fluorescence. Those things will affect price. Where is she sourcing these diamonds from - any idea?

No idea :(

Just by you looking at the pictures you’ve
posted of the two ovals so far…..
(ignore any inclusions just for the sake of discussion)
but by your eye
which “look” of which stone do you like over the other?
these two ovals are pretty different aesthetically from each other

If I had to pick, I like the second one much more because it is not as narrow. However, I see a bowtie in the second one that concerns me that I didn't see in the first one. What about you?

I was under the impression that she made the setting. Everything seems very odd now. I can only guess she thought I would be in agreement to the center diamond she chose (and I was at first until I started digging deeper into inclusions).

Are you able to get your deposit back?

Are you able to get your deposit back?

I'm honestly scared to ask. I don't think so...I'm trying to give her the chance to find the right diamond for me, but this is the most stressful process.

Well, you really don't know what your real options are until you ask.

Have an honest (phone call) discussion with expectations and wants with your jeweler. They don’t know your expectations if you don’t tell them and vice versa.

if after that - it doesn’t work out
(not knowing the amount of your deposit)
offer to pay something for their time and labor and move on elsewhere.

if the jeweler doesnt know you have a specific wants and look to the oval - I think this is why you are getting such different looking ovals as what they are picking out for you.

Honestly I would get your deposit back. I don't think she custom made that setting--it looks like a stock setting for a standardized size stone. And even if she made it, it's incredibly simple overall (it's not a super unusual setting).
