Keep petite tab prongs (Tiffany-like) or ask for claws?

Hi everyone, just received a beautifully made ring from VC after lurking here for all the helpful advice. Everything has been super smooth and amazing, but I wanted to get your thoughts about a minor detail on the prongs.

The design is based on the Gabriella where the prongs are wider claws (I think the ring in the photo actually belonged to a PS member!)




I received the ring today and the prongs are more tabbed. It's definitely a more delicate tab and very close IMO to a Tiffany setting. I think it might've just been a tiny detail that was missed during production.

The only reason I'm thinking about getting it changed is because all of the solitaire VC rings feature claws, and I don't know if keeping them as tabs takes away from his aesthetic.

To be honest, I think it actually looks really good, and my partner would never notice (she wanted a slightly customized design but never even mentioned the prongs). I'm going to reach out next week and ask if changing the prongs to claws are an option, but wanted to seek opinions here on if I should just leave it as is!

The ring is stunning. I would leave the prongs as is. I think they're absolutely perfect.

It's beautiful ring and the tab prongs are really well done. I understand the appeal of claw prongs, they're beautiful, my set has them. The only question is how much does she use her hands? Claws points are more likely to catch and snag. That can be hugely annoying and cause anxiety. I have anxiety about mine- though mine being very delicate is the cause. They'll need to be looked at periodically by a jeweler to make sure they're laying correctly.
Honestly, unless she asked for them specifically there's no reason to change the classic tab.

I think it is beautiful as is too. I am not always a fan of claw prongs so these on your ring are dainty and will blend right in with the diamond. I think the Gabriella is a beautiful six prong setting!

On another note, tell us about the diamond! It looks beautiful too!!

I have had claw prongs and while they stylistically look great, they are not always the easiest to wear. They can snag hair and sweaters. I think you should leave them since they’ll hardly be noticeable with that beautiful ring and stone.
But if your intended (or you) really wanted claw prongs I would send it back for them. Give her what she wants.

Just my own experience: I spent years lusting after claw prongs after seeing them on pricescope. My e-ring is a Tiffany soli. My husband years later got me a VC with a bigger stone and double claw prongs (I've since sold). In person, I was a bit underwhelmed. The craftsmanship of the ring was beautiful but I realized I would want claw prongs for squarish stones or vintage designs. For a more modern 6 prong solitaire, I much prefer tab. I can also confirm the claw prongs picked up lint easily.

You can always ask VC if you can try the ring out first with tab prongs and if you don't like them, if you can send the ring back for claw prongs. In my opinion, the Gabriella looks amazing with tab prongs. Gorgeous ring and stone!

I have no eye for design and wasn't sure if the claws were a "signature look" of his. We joked around about the poor design suggestions I sent early on on where to place the small accent diamonds, so the last thing I wanted to do was take away from his designs.

Thank you! The diamond is from Victor, a 2.5ct F VS2 ~8.8mm with 55.7 table / 34.6 crown / 40.7 pavilion. I'll probably follow up with better pictures once I actually propose!

Funny enough I actually learned about super ideal stones because I (jokingly) took my girlfriend to a local boutique jewelry store to look around, and told her buying a diamond with them would bump me up on the Rolex waitlist. They were super nice and showed us "Hearts on Fire" and "Fire and Ice" under a scope and it sent me spiraling down a deep rabbit hole on perfect diamond cuts.

I ended up reserving this stone, read just about every PS thread I could on WF/BGD/David S, watched every JannPaul video in existence, and bought it 24 hrs later. I honestly feel like I got super lucky.

I binge-read so many threads here, recognize so many names, and have followed so many your journeys, and definitely want to thank you all for the knowledge and help over so many years!




I was genuinely concerned that it looked too good for a VS2 clarity -- I'd gone through so many 360 loupe videos over that 24 hr span haha! They sent me a high-res video that same day and told me they were also shocked at how clean it was.

I woke up the next morning and saw that Victor had posted the video on Reddit and it was well received, so I felt super lucky and relieved.



Without all the knowledge here, I would've actually purchased a diamond with the right proportions but no ASET, questionable optical symmetry, and a hidden brown tinge. The diamond was on 5 different websites, my jeweler friend pulled it up and saw there was a tiny comment in the system of a "top tinge". I asked all the websites, 2 of them pulled the diamond listings, and the other 3 still insisted that it was no problem and pushed me to buy it anyway.

I would keep it as is. It's lovely. If your fiance wants claw prongs then you can send back to VC. But I would at least give it to her this way and see how she feels

That is my original VC Gabriella ring w/ a 3.6ct diamond (from many upgrades ago, lol) featured on his webite. The modified claw prongs were both sturdy and delicate at the same time. I had no issues while wearing this prong style if you choose to change it later.

I think the ring is perfect, as-is.

I echo the other comments to keep it an option so that if your gal decides, after wearing the ring for a while, she/you can change the prongs to claw. I also had the experience of clawed prongs catching the tiniest bits of "stuff" which was irritating, and very hard to remove.

You should see all the PriceScope threads from folks who are trying to get "perfect tab prongs" that look like the Tiffany setting. People are trying hard to get the look you have! It think your tabs look really nice.

TY! Best wishes on your own decision too -- been following your thread! We visited a Tiffany store & saw a lot of Tacori settings during our search. Looking back at the photos there is something really nice about the simple setting. I had no idea the prongs were a part of that elegance!

Just a small update in case it helps anyone:

Keeping them as is for sure.

Victor said he could change them anytime, and that past clients have asked for "delicate tab prongs" with the Gabriella, so he did this ring the exact same way.

Definitely intentional, and can be requested!

Victor has an eye for these things, so I think it's smart that you're keeping them as is until or unless the recipient changes her mind.
