Long story short, I have a ring and documentation about the purchase of this ring from 1980. Incuded in the documentation is a trade-in policy that says I can trade it in after 5 years for 150% original retail value, or 200% after 10 years. They don''t use the word "lifetime" but it also doesn''t say anything about an expiration.

I''m just wondering what people think the chances are that this agreement is honored by Kay Jewelers.

Thanks.

Those pieces were under their old guarantee but I would certainly take it to the store and find out!

wouldn't hurt to check it out and would hope that they still honor such a guarantee

I think your chances are petty good but, of course, the fine print in the contract is going to be the key. Often it’s necessary to have the piece inspected every 6 months in order to maintain this sort of thing for example. They may also have some limitations on what you are permitted to get in exchange in terms of how much you must spend, whether the new item is on ‘sale’, etc. By all means ask them. One of the nice things about the Kays/Jared/Sterling organization is they try to be upfront with people about what they are offering.

Lifetime is Lifetime...I would assume they would honor it.

Kay Jewelers was acquired by Sterling, Inc in 1991.
Possibly, the older warranties may or may not be honored since the acquistion.
It never hurts to ask the store manager.

I purchased a bracelet out of Kay''s around 10 years ago and traded it up 2 years ago without any problems. You may just need to take the piece and the paperwork into the store. Kay''s main thing is bringing the piece in every 6 mths for inspection and cleaning. When I traded my bracelet up, it looked like a $100 piece eventhough I had paid around $700 for it, it was just the time in which I purchased it and how diamonds have gotten bigger and better over the years. Also, is the piece a diamond because they have changed their policy on precious stones, ex. rubies, sapphaires , emeralds I don''t believe they honor those trade ups anymore. Most of their precious stones are now treated or man made.
