Hello all,

I just took delivery of a VS2/G/Excellent 0.8 trilogy ring, but am not happy with the inclusion visible from the side. It is GIA VS2 but I understand that this is top view eye clean (which it is) but I can’t help notice from at least 12” this inclusion as pictured. Is this normal and to be expected? Jeweller has no problems with return, but do I need to go to VS1 or VVS to get eye clean from the side?

... I would not be happy with that either, and I'm pretty laid back WRT inclusions...

A thought: it's a reputable graded VS2, so it's not like it was oriented the way it is to mask other inclusions. If you are not particular about the arrows pattern sitting under the prongs in some specific configuration and if the stone IS clean to your requirements face-up, and if you would be happy with this stone if you couldn't see that inclusion so loud and clear, could you talk to them about just turning the stone so that that side-view is interrupted by one of the prongs/sidestones?

(It's very possible that that will just blunt the view as opposed to making it totally impossible to see from the side - looking again it's awfully high, I'm wondering if it might clear the slightly lower sidestones altogether)

no you dont have to get a VS1 or VVS to be eye clean from the sides. Different stones have different types of inclusions. They dont all have black ones, you should be able to find a VS2 stone thats eye clean all around. Apparently just not this one :((

Sorry to hear that

That was my 1st thought as well. Could it be turned so the prongs/ struts hide the inclusion or is the diamond no longer mind clean to you regardless just knowing it is there. I have a 3 stone ring with the center that has a very sizable inclusion that blends in very well with the diamond's body color. There is 1 central spot that doesn't really blend in and SK was able to hide it under a prong so I don't see it. I'm of the mind set "out of sight, out of mind."

That seems like quite a large inclusion for a VS2, to me. I don't think I'd be very happy with it.

Agreed. I'd try another VS2.

Perhaps the jeweler can rotate the stone in the setting. If you're otherwise happy they may be able to put that under a prong or between the stones.

That said, if you're unhappy send it back. Visibility of inclusions from the side is not part of the GIA grading standards but if it's part of YOUR standards, get a different one.

This. :))

I agree with the others that if you otherwise love the stone, I would ask if it could be rotated to hide the inclusion. If it's no longer mind clean to you, or the setter doesn't believe it could be satisfactorily hidden, then I would exchange for another stone.

I'm sorry, I can imagine how frustrating this must be, I wouldn't want to part with my new beauty so quickly after receiving it. :(( But in the long run, you will be much happier correcting it now then losing one more moment of enjoyment from it! :))

Thanks for the replies.

I’ve not yet presented it to the new owner yet - this is coming this weekend with a trip to Venice! So I plan to ask the question with it, then send it back (I’m kind of hoping it doesn’t fit her so I don’t have to tell her it’s not quite perfect!).

The seller (UK based) is willing to find an eye clean from both top and side view to replace it, so I’m going to go down this route I think.

Thanks.

I would honestly just rotate it in the mount! Out of sight, out of mind.
