Hello,

I just made my first trip out to look for a ring and visited a local store my friend purchased his ring at. The salesperson showed me a few diamonds and I left with a GIA certificate for one that I thought looked pretty good. I don't know much about diamonds so figured I would get some input from anyone here on the forum. The GIA Report # is 1109201197. It is a round brilliant 1.30 ct with measurements of 6.95-6.99 x 4.37mm.

Color is G
Clarity is SI1
Cut is Very Good

Polish and Symmetry are both Excellent
Fluorescence is None

Table is 55%
Depth is 62.7%
Crown is I believe 36 (it's hard to read on the photocopy)
Pavillion is 41

She said retail is $12,950 I talked her down to $8500 before I left and I think I could get her down at least another $500-1000. Any suggestions? When I plugged it into the cut advisor it came back a 5.4. Should I look at some more they can get or one with a better score than 5.4? Any suggestions on price?

Thanks in advance,

Ryan

Look for something better.

Keep looking...the right stone is out there!

Edit - have you been given the cheat sheet on numbers to look for? Well, if not here they are...

depth 60-62%
table 54-57%
crown angle 34-35 deg
pavilion angle 40.6 - 41 deg

polish and symmetry - very good and above

Crown 36 and pavilion 41 is not an ideal combination.
It is a "steep/deep" that has probably been cut for maximum weight retention - and the depth being greater than 62% confirms this. Such stones fill every jewellery store that I look at, these days.

However, being graded "very good" is probably about right for the stone, although a laboratory cut grade is only a vague guide to the actual optical properties.
While a super-ideal cut diamond would be 9.5/10, the stone that you mention will probably be about 7/10 for light-reflection performance.

To some people''s eyes, the steep/deep is unpleasant because it has a dark grey-black ring of reduced light reflection around the inner edge of the table when viewed from above. In severe steep/deep stones, the area under the table has significantly reduced or non-existent light performance, with the arrows not showing much fire or scintillation; just darkness. In some stones, cutters tricks can make the stone look better (or worse). I have a stone with GIA-Ex proportions, but it''s a steep/deep 35.5/41.2. It got downgraded by GIA from EX to VG cut because of some cutters tricks. But ironically, those tricks actually make it perform better; it''s probably worth 8/10 for performance.

You could probably find a better stone than the one you list, at the same or better price, via one of the Pricescope sellers. I can see ideal-cut/excellent cut stones G SI1 1.3ct for about $8000 on some reputable online listings.
I wouldn''t hurry to buy the stone that you''ve been offered.

the diameter looks small for its weight.

I vote with the majority, too deep physically and steep deep angled, you can do better.
