hello,

your opinion would be *greatly* appreciated on this stone:

shape: round brilliant
carat: 1.2
cut: ideal
clarity: vs1
color: f
flourescence: none
depth: 59.9%
polish: ex
symmetry: ex
culet: none

dimmensions:
table: 57%
crown height: 14.6%
girdle: 3.2%-0.9%
pavillion: 42%
crown angle: 34.4 degrees
pavillion angle (i think): 40.1 degrees

this is an EGL stone report, and the cut is egl ideal (whatever that means?)

i have read various posts on EGL vs. GIA, etc...however if the cut is excellent, is this stone worth it even if it grades a colour/clarity lower from GIA?

thanks very much

Is the cert EGL USA?

the pavilion is too shallow so it will have obstruction issues.

Sorry to but in, but I''m trying to learn as much as I can...when you say the pavillion is too shallow and will have obstruction issues, what does that mean? Will the stone not reflect light properly? Thanks for helping me understand. :)

What Strm means, very basically is that due to the shallow pavilion angle mainly, this diamond could be prone to look dark in some viewing conditions or have obstruction issues. Look for diamonds which have a pavilion angle between 40.6 - 41 degrees to be safer.

There is a video titled Head Obstruction in the gallery here, so you can see this effect that Strm cautions.

thanks for feedback so far.

it is EGL, not EGL-USA.

also, any pointers on how pavillion angle is indicated on a grading report?

i''m not sure if i have noted the correct pavillion angle...

interestingly, my report doesn''t look like either of the two urls you posted (thanks!). in small print on the copy i have, it does say "this document was produced with the following security measures...for EGL USA".

based on this pricescope diagram, confirming pavillion angle to be 40.1 degrees, and crown angle 34.4 degrees (no %ages noted, only degrees)...

there is reference to %ages in previous posts - any clarifications now that i have confirmed degrees are noted on the report?

i did some digging around, and on the egl usa site, i could actually key in my report number, and voila! here is the report...

Great stuff! So it appears the pavilion angle is correct, it is shallow.

loralei - thanks for your replies...greatly appreciated.

so in terms of obstruction due to pavillion angle - this would only manifest in darker conditions (viewed the video)?

in your opinion, how much am i sacrificing w/this stone (assuming the other aspects of the diamond are good)?

I just plugged the numbers into the HCA, and it comes up either 1.2 or 1.4. VG light return, and Excellent in all other aspects. I''m the owner of a far more shallow diamond and it has no head obstruction issues at all, even though the numbers might indicate that it would.

Flygirl, what are the proportions of your diamond out of interest? We were saying this diamond could have potential obstruction issues and with this pav angle, so it is prudent to be cautious and mention it to the poster considering buying the stone. An Idealscope image would be helpful also if available. The thing is we don't want to go ahead and say it won't be a problem in case there is one, and then the poster isn't pleased with the stone, so we have to be careful, especially when all we have to go on are numbers.
