For my nieces e.r., I opted for the 3 prong regular instead of martini. I can''t remember exactly why though. I think it was that the martini was too flush. But, her''s sit very low. It gives the appearance of the diamond just floating on the ear.

The price diff is approx $200 total (for the pair).
... or $100 per earring...
... or approx 27 cents a day per ear if worn for one year...
... 14 cents a day per ear after two years wear...
... 9 cents a day after 3 years...
... My math isn''t the greatest (as you all know), but I think after 80 or 90 years of daily wear, they''ll start to pay ME....
That made me laugh out loud - not an easy thing to do!

Go for the platinum if you want white - really, it''s not that much in the grand scheme of things and it may stop you from GOING CRAZY

Lynn I got the same reaction when I wanted to set my princess cut studs in platinum, but it just felt right to me and in studs the cost isn't that significant. I wear mine every day and I have not regretted the extra expense of setting them in platinum. Go for it!!!

hmm hmm hmm. i can''t wait to hear the updates!!!

if you are going to wear them THAT MUCH and WG bothers you that much then get the platinum! it will pay off over time.

however, i''ll say one more time then shut up about it....these are earrings...you won''t really see the backings or the prongs, it''s not like a ring or bracelet where you are checking it out all the time yanno! i don''t know what your budget is but i''d get bigger stones and WG but YOU KNOW ME!

I agree resoundingly with Mara......if you really want platinum that badly, then of course you should go for it.

BUT....if the only reason you want platinum is fear of yellowing, it IS important to point out (as Mara already has) that the only thing you''ll likely see, if at all, is the prongs. You will be wearing them most of the time, as you mentioned. Earrings aren''t the same as rings....they aren''t exposed to being in all kinds of chemicals and in the sink half the time on your hands. The chance of them yellowing (especially on the only pieces you''d possibly see on the ear--the prongs) is pretty slim.

But again, you have to get what you''re comfortable with. My vote would be for WG and bigger stones, but that''s just me ...hehehe ....and Mara.

Thanks, everyone, for the sage words of wisdom! I appreciate each and every post. And I'll certainly let you guys know what I end up doing.

OOOOOOOHHHHH JENN-I-FER! I have a question for you, please! Your Baby Blings are only 10 points apiece??!
23.gif
I was looking at your photo again and can't believe that those little sparklers are only .10!!!!
30.gif
They look so much bigger than that to me next to the 1+ Mama Blings!!!! And how did you ever decide on that particular size for the the babies?!

THANKS!
Lynn

Oh Lynn you know you already are figuring the platinum costs in, so just go for it. I mean if it''s only $200 more and you are wearing them THAT MUCH then it''s worth it for that peace of mind. Our minds really can play tricks on us yanno!

Honestly, price drove that decision, Lynn, but I feel it worked out perfectly. I did inquire about .15 ACAs but the price nearly doubled and I was already being *bad* (let''s just say that hubby agreed to a price for the studs and I sort of, well, exceeded it just a little....

)...But I am really, really pleased. You know I am all about the bling, and the 10 pointers satisfy that but don''t overwhelm any other earring.

BTW, I''ve noticed I have been wearing the studs alone most of the time and use the baby blings for hoops, etc...the studs are so great by themselves!
30.gif
You''ll see how you like it when you get YOURS

...but it is a good idea to have a nice pair of babies for those 2nd holes--I am so glad I made this extra "investment."

Go for platinum. Although I must admit I found huge variations in pricing. I got platinum in la pousette backs for $200 total (in martinis or 4 prong).

Lynn...

I currently have 2.50 ct tw diamond studs in four prong platinum baskets, the problem that I am having is that they kind of droop. I hardly ever wear them because of the droop factor

.

Instead of upgrading my side stones in my ring, I am thinking about upgrading my studs to 3.00 ct tw and having them put in 3 prong martini settings in platinum. My only question is that I have heard that the martini style can actually make your hole bigger...does anyone know if that is true?

I was quoted the price of $250 for the martini settings with friction backs and $310 for la pousettes. I agree that it''s kind of on the expensive side but I just don''t want to take the chance of my settings turning yellow and having to have them dipped.

Good luck with your decision and have fun deciding. It''s the best part

OK... let's talk earring BACKS now. What ARE all my options??!!

I have NO idea what a LaPousette (sp?!) is!
33.gif

I know "screw on" is an option, but my sister had screw on pearl earrings once and I just never liked the feel of those. Kinda skeeved me out, actually!

What is the difference between "friction" backs, "squeeze" backs, and "clutch" backs?

Are there any other types of backs? Am I missing anything?!

Any and all advice, opinions, (and of course, photos!) GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED!

Thanks!

Hi Lynn, there''s a thread here talking about La Pousette backs (https://www.pricescope.com/diamonds/x28430.htm). It has a picture too. At first they were sort of difficult to manipulate, but now I''m totally used to it and it''s no problem. My posts have 2 notches for extra security. Don''t know if that''s standard or not. Mine also cost $45 in 14k wg.

I have a feeling that getting bigger stones will only make the droop worse
31.gif

Seriously though, oversized backs do help stop earrings drooping, regardless of the setting. And I too would like to see the ones you''ve got before they get upgraded.

I am one of the unfortunate ones that do not know how to use my digital camera. I have at least 5 chips that I need to download with at least two years of pictures on them. It''s a goal of mine to have this done sooner rather than later.

The problem with my earrings is that I don''t think they were set far enough into the baskets, does that make any sense? Maybe if I have them set farther back into the basket they wont droop. I would hope that the Martini settings would sit further back in the ear. I could also ask her to make larger backings so that they wont sag. Jessica Simpson wears 4 carats in each ear...how does she keep it from drooping?

My jeweler doesn''t have any matching 1.50 stones at the color / clarity I am looking for, it might take a few weeks which is fine because I''m not in a rush. My current studs are are G / SI1 and I think if I go to 1.50 each I would go down in color maybe to H, I or even J but keep the clarity in the SI range.

If I do this my side stones will not get upgraded for a couple of years which is okay.

Sighhh....will it ever come to an end?
