So after a few months of trying to find the perfect engagement ring I have finally figured out what my soon to be likes and it turns out to be a simple round solitaire in a platinum knife edge setting. I have done some research at a local diamond retailer here in San Antonio, primarily to narrow down the setting but today I took a look at their diamond selection in my price range $9000-$9500 for the stone. I have picked two diamonds from online retailers that I'm interested in and have included the GIA specs below along with the HCA and AGA cut class specs. My question of course is which one or at least some insight to help me make the best decision.

My local retailer had two diamonds that looked interesting although I have not seen the certificates what I can tell you is that they are EGL certified and have the following basic characteristics. The first is a 1.53ct Round J VVS1 priced at $10,875 the second is a round 1.51ct K IF priced at $10,642 both slightly over my planned budget. The larger faced up visibly larger than the slightly lower carat weight diamond and there was no discernible color difference. They looked great in the store.

The diamonds I have selected from online retailers are as follows.

I have this one in my possession and it looks nice but doesn't have the same brilliance as the ones I saw in the store. I don't know if it's just the lighting and I don't think the store would take kindly to me taking it in and comparing to their selection.

I'm going to see this one on Monday. I just want to get the best value for my money as I'm sure everyone else does.
Thanks for taking the time.

Any personal thoughts on EGL certified diamonds? Also do you think the pricing is inline for the online retailers?

Thanks

Also, yes, it's the jewelers lights. They can make anything look good. See all diamonds away from the lights.

Also, take kindly or not, I'd take your stone in with you. Also, make sure the stone is clean. Oils from fingers/hands can affect performance and the diamonds jewelers will show you will be clean.

LOL thanks, I was just reading some other comments on EGL. The stones looked good in person and under the scope but I certainly don't want to deal with any issues in the future should we try and trade up. Thanks again for the input, much appreciated.

Gypsy is of course giving you wonderful advice, but I am curious if there is a specific reason (cultural? other?) that you want a vvs2/if stone. If you were open to eyeclean vs and even si stones, you may have more options.
