One of my friends boyfriends is looking at a .50 diamond excellent cut VVs. d color and a 1.10 good cut I2 k color. If you had the choice between the two what would you buy and why? Thanks

.5! why get something that doesn't sparkle, is the color of pee (not saying all Ks are!) and looks like a mess?

a nice eternity band

If I had to choice, I''d take the ex. cut .50...not into and I2 K, good cut even if it''s bigger

I''d buy neither. I have never seen a "good" cut K in person. I have an ideal cut K stone and I think it is gorgeous! I have tons of pics throughout THIS thread if you care to see. And 95% of the time it is not pee color. Well, it''s NEVER pee color actually. 5% of the time I see a slight tint from the side angle. But it doesn''t bother me. However! I would not go with a good cut. Why not find something inbetween the .5 ct and the 1ct and get a stone with ideal cut. That is what makes all the difference in any color stone. I''m totally convinced of that!

The Ex .5 VVS(2?) D is certainly worth more. No brainer between the two. But, why either extreme? What about an Ex .80ct Si1 ,i color?

There are seemingly as many diamonds in the world as grains of sand. Look further. Look a lot. Make sure you have a lifetime trade up policy, because someday you might want to trade because you find the color, or inclusions, or size, or what the heck, just not what you thought you could live with. Take your time and enjoy the process of looking.

Either the 0.5 ct, but what I would really rather is to drop the VVS to VS2 or SI1 (eyeclean) and get a bigger rock in the colorless range, D-F, or a G with some blue fluor.

Basically, I'd take the 0.5 ct if it was my only choice, but if I could phenagle (sp?!) decreasing some of the specs to get a bigger stone, I would. But I wouldn't go for an I2, mediocre cut K just because it was bigger. The 'ends' there don't justify the 'means.'

Yeah. Um. Neither.

I'm thinking .80-.90 VS2 or SI 1 ideal cut OVAL or PEAR OR MARQUISE (look big for size and cost less than rounds) in the G-H range. With flourescence. What exactly is the budget? Seriously, let us know what the budget is... we love hunting for this stuff.

Other option for me, personally? My birthstone (okay mine is expensive-- freaking sapphires-- but still less than a diamond) In a nice diamond pave setting. http://www.topazery.com/antique-jewelry-item-rg1636.htm (That's a Beverly K setting too) Or like Buena Girls below

No I2 in any color or cut for me. I'd have to choose the other if the choice was those two. But I agree with the others, I'd go to an Ex cut, H VS2 and get a stone in between the size of those two.

(Julie, someday I'm going to find a new avatar picture so we won't be twins forever!)

The reason for the extremes in size are that the two stones are owned by my friends mom and would like him to use one for an engagement ring for his to be wife (he is a history teacher in a small town not allot of excess cash). And he was just wounding which to go with size over quality or what. I think she would like the .50 due to its clarity and color. Thanks for your help.

I agree a well cut K is never the colour of pee, even an L ( and I know) isn't yellow if well cut. A great cut will make any colour look incredible, even an O or P etc. Also check out Sevens One's gorgeous K and Mrs Jam's, those along with Sunkists fab diamond will show you that a K can look so beautiful and face up white.

Angel I wouldn't buy either of those diamonds, the K colour wouldn't bother me in the slightest as I love the warmer colours, but the I2 clarity and probable dodgy cut quality would bother me hugely. With the D and smaller I would shoot for a middle ground and go in between colour and clarity for a bit more size with a great cut. But if the friend values the colour and clarity over size, then that's the diamond to pick out of the two.
