Why would the makers of the Jubilee opt for getting their stones graded by GCAL instead of say GIA or AGS? Is it as reliable?

For one reason GIA will not call it a Jubilee but some such name as a square modified brilliant.

I do not know all the reasons that Mr. Horowitz chose GCAL, but I know that he sent several stones to GIA to verify that the results were accurate and that he was VERY pleased with the consistency of the GCAL and GIA grades. I will let him or Jonathon elaborate more fully should they desire to, but I will be very comfortable with the GCAL grades. I fully agreed with the grades on the few stones that I have personally had in my possession.

GCAL is Donald Palmieri's operation. He is the publisher of the well known Market Monitor Report (Rapaport's closest rival), and has a reputation for conservative grading.

My guess is that he's quite a bit more "user friendly" than either the GIA or AGS, and has a much more conservative reputation than the EGL. His certs give more information than the GIA, and I wouldn't be surprised if he "out-marketed" the AGS.

Good for him.

I also know Don Palmieri pretty well from my years with ASA. He is a very straight shooter and a super gemologist. A professional. His firm is going after the "branded" stone market and I believe he and GCAL will do a great job.

Timing was one of the main reasons given to me. GCAL can turn around certs more rapidly than the big labs. With demand exceeding supply and people needing Jubilee's ASAP for e-rings etc. it is clear that Cary wants to get them into his stores hands sooner rather than later.

I actually like the format of the GCAL report wich includes photos of the diamond, laser inscription and graphics/stats demonstrating symmetry and brilliance.
