John McCain Has Died

I am not sure McCain has the best qualities for the politicians, but am I the only one to feel that with him, the whole epoch of politicians who had some class, honesty and ideals, is going away?

President Carter is probably the last one of that group. I wish him well.

President Carter has always been my favorite president. Every time I say it people say he was a good man but not a good president. Now that we have a president with the worst character in the world and a low IQ, I am more convinced than ever that I would be best off with Jimmy Carter. He had a sterling character and a high IQ.

@AGBF You could believe every word Jimmy Carter said. He was a great man.

The pictures of Meghan McCain at her father’s casket were heart wrenching. My heart broke for her today.

Carter was a good president and had a good team, and very good ideas. I believe some presidencies are unlucky through no one's fault. USSR invading Afghanistan, Iran hostage crisis, oil prices. Probably unlucky chain of events. But - if all Christians were like Carter, I'd join the church. I deeply respect him, think that difficulties of his presidency were his misfortune, not fault, and I hope he does well.

My fondest memories of Jimmy Carter's Presidency.

That is very true. He became the first Prez. in US history to be elected into office but didn't win re-election.

I agree with this. Iran held those hostages until Reagan was inaugurated just to humiliate Carter, then immediately released them. Reagan did nothing special to deserve their release. Blaming Carter for everything that happened worldwide during his presidency is just silly.

Ah. Trolling at its very best: such a spectacularly wrong and easy to refute load of BS that people think they're going to lose their minds knowing that people exist (lots of them, these days - emboldened by our very own Stupid In Chief no doubt) who will say something that utterly wrong in public with a straight face, and just not care.

Luckily, we have the Internet now, and I can Google, or is Google fake search engine now, lol? From my memory, was someone not re-elected but elected again, later? Cleveland or someone? Didn't someone die soon after the election?

So, in 20 century alone:

George H.W. Bush lost to Bill Clinton in 1992.

Jimmy Carter lost to Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Gerald Ford lost to Jimmy Carter in 1976.

Herbert Hoover lost to Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1932.

William Taft lost to Woodrow Wilson in 1912.

And if I check them all...for my own education, what you said will simply sound not true

Speaking of...I read yesterday was that Carter founded the Department of Education...good thinking!

(Just saw "Make America read again" T-shirt online)

You are right. Right off the top of my head I can tell you that William Henry Harrison, who died 31 days into office, wasn't re-elected, either!

Signs of a weak Prez. They knew Reagan wasn't gonna play games with them.

You know what? In honor of John McCain, today I am going to say that it doesn't matter which president brought those Americans home. What matters was that they came home. God bless President Carter. God bless President Reagan's memory. God bless America.

Here is the whole list. I was right - Grover Cleveland served two terms, but not one after another.

I know I have many "white spots" when it comes to US history, after all, we were not taught it in USSR schools, but in general, we all should know at least some "trivia" facts about US Presidents. Just enough to pass the civics, perhaps, as we are Americans ;) ?

I did not watch Senator McCain's televised funeral in today, but I have been reading voraciously about the plans he laid out before his death for his memorial services and also reading about them as they unfold. This article (link provided) in today's "The New York Times" describes the highlights of the service held at his own Baptist church in Arizona today. This is just one poignant excerpt from it:

"It was Mr. Woods, though, who brought tears to many as he recalled that when Mr. McCain was held captive in Vietnam, one of the guards indicated he was a Christian by drawing the sign of the cross in the dirt of the prison courtyard. It was the Christmas season, Mr. Woods explained, and the guard wanted to demonstrate their shared faith.

The holidays were difficult in the five-and-a-half years Mr. McCain spent in captivity, Mr. Woods said, but prisoners of war endured in part by singing Christmas songs to one another. Mr. McCain’s favorite was 'Silent Night.'

As Mr. Woods concluded his remarks, he saluted the naval aviator who refused an early release from prison camp and would go on to be a towering figure in American politics.

'He served his country with honor,' he said. 'He fought the good fight. He finished the race. He kept the faith.' And then Mr. Woods stepped from the lectern and drew a cross with his foot on the stage.

'Sleep in heavenly peace,' he said. 'Sleep in heavenly peace.'"

This is another article that may be of interest to those who read the one above. It describes how Senator McCain planned his funeral and memorial services for eight months prior to succumbing to his brain cancer.

Megan did a wonderful job today. That could not have been easy. :(
President Bush and President Obama did a great job too.
Still a very sad day even though he is not in pain now. The world needs more McCain’s not fewer.

I watched every second of the funeral. Indeed Meghan did a wonderful job. The service was beautiful, but the best thing about it was that it was planned entirely by John McCain, so we knew it was absolutely what he he wanted down to the last detail.

RIP, Senator McCain.

John McCain would have been so proud of Meghan today. I can’t even fathom how hard this past week has been for the McCain family.

I just finished watching CNN's video of the full service.

Meghan was incredible. Her eulogy, and her delivery, were so powerful. It was, however, her simple "My father is gone" that stood out most for me. "My father is gone," she said. At three different points. "My father is gone" is the aching lament of all of us who have lost loving fathers who cherished and championed us, and whom we loved and admired.

His 106-year-old mother has been dealt an even harsher hand. Burying your child is so contrary to what we think of as the natural order of life. So I imagine that she especially must have wished throughout the course of the past year that she could be the one stricken with the fatal cancer.

No way I could vote for John McCain with Sarah palin as his running mate. He would have won if he had chosen wisely.

And if Senator McCain had picked someone else as his running mate, we might not ended up with Donald Trump as President. :nono:

Yes. I watched her eulogy, and it broke my heart. I thought afterwards how she deserved much credit, because there's no way on God's green earth I could have done that at my dad's funeral. No way.

I was wiping away tears listening to Meghan's eulogy.
