John McCain Has Died

Makes me very sad. A great person and big loss.

So sorry for this country. He was above and beyond being a decent human being, having served for the greater good and something bigger than himself, to borrow a quote.

Rest In Peace Mr. McCain.

Very sad indeed ... no words; just a sad moment for all in our country. RIP & God speed! :cry2:

Thank you for your service to this country.

He was much to be respected. He was sincere. He was a dignified representative of his state, and he served the country with dignity. RIP, senator.

:(sad A true American hero.

Wow, that was fast. He leaves quite a legacy.

One of the very few politicians I respect. He put country above politics.

Rest in Peace.

HI:

Sad, very sad. Such an inspiration and a very good human being.

kind regards, Sharon

He was one of our countries true heroes. Very sad day indeed.

So sad. I thought he might have a little more time! It was so quick. :cry2::cry2::cry2:

As someone watching the US from the other side of the world, I sometimes wonder how John McCain didn't become president. He really was highly respected by all, regardless of political stance.

RIP sir, I may not be a US citizen but I can appreciate and respect what he did for the people. 30+ years in his position showed it was more than just a popularity contest.

In listening to the tributes and quotes, I found myself moved to tears. We live in such a turbulent time in terms of politics and politicians. My hope is that in his death, we are reminded and renewed of several things - regardless of your party affiliation.

Character matters. We elect these folks to represent us and the way in which they use this privilege matters. Mr. McCain says that he wasn't perfect, didn't always do things right, but always had a view toward serving all people - not just those of a particular persuasion. We learn as we grow and age and can certainly choose on any day to try to sit our ship on the right course. I applaud his efforts in always trying to be better rather than thinking he was the best.

Truth matters. We need to be able to trust the leaders we elect. When they speak to us and relate information to us, we need to be able to trust that their information is as accurate as possible. Opinions factor in of course but we need to know where they stand and what their course of action is going to be. They are the protectors of our freedom and having integrity in their speech and actions matters.

We have lost a great patriot in John McCain. May he rest in peace for eternity and always serve as a reminder to us of what the great can truly be.

And a tweeted reminiscence that Benjamin Wittes (who focuses on national security and related legal issues) posted earlier this year:

And because today isn't the first time I've watched this because it always puts a smile on my face, here is the full video of then Senators McCain and Obama poking fun at themselves & playfully roasting each other and their running mates at the October 16, 2008 Al Smith Memorial Dinner. Sen. McCain -- who was especially delightful -- begins speaking at 6:35:

Thank you for posting a video of John McCain taking the microphone from an audience member who did not think that it was a compliment to call Barack Obama an Arab, Molly!

I do not remember whether I watched the Al Smith dinner where McCain and Obama spoke, but I watched both their speeches in their entirety tonight because you put them up there. They were so uplifting! So different from Trump!

Your thread also led me here, to this link. In case anyone didn't make it to this article in "The Atlantic" from what you posted, please read this. Thank you again so much for posting everything you did.

I am very sad to hear about his death. I respected him a great deal.

I am sad for the loss for the nation and his family. I didn't agree with him sometimes, but he tried and he served our country with honor. I am sorry the world has lost a good man. I too remember when he stood up against the lies being told about a political opponent. It spoke volumes to his character and integrity. I wish we had more political like him today. I hope his family is finding comfort in knowing that he was respected and a good human. He made the world a better place.

I had a ton of respect for John McCain. He pulled no punches. I would have voted for him if only he had not chosen S. Palin as his running mate.

Our country is definitely poorer without him. Godspeed.

I totally agree with your posting, except that I would not have voted for Senator McCain over (then) Senator Obama, running mate or no running mate. But not voting for him (because, for example, one doesn't like his tax policies) does not mean that one does not honor and respect him. He was a towering figure that commanded the respect of all Americans. Had he been elected, I would have been proud to have him as our president!

The White House flag should be lowered to half mast now until Senator McCain is laid to rest. The White House is the people's house, not Donald Trump's personal house.

Such a loss for this country. I had gotten a notification on my phone stating that he had stopped all treatment... it wasn't even 24 hours that I received news of his passing. He was a true American hero and will be missed.

I will be quite honest and say that my preferance was Hillary in that election, and when Obama won the nomination I was fairly disgusted. I didn't feel Obama was ready at that point. But once Palin became the VP candidate I had no choice but Obama.

I, too, felt that Hillary deserved it.
Between McCain and Obama, I definitely wanted Obama because McCain seemed impulsive to me.

I am not sure McCain has the best qualities for the politicians, but am I the only one to feel that with him, the whole epoch of politicians who had some class, honesty and ideals, is going away?

President Carter is probably the last one of that group. I wish him well.

Carter is the best ex-President ever. What he (and his wife Rosalyn) accomplished in the years after he was defeated for re-election is incredible.
