Is there a decent classifieds for jewelry other that craigslist? One where people are buying/selling higher end rings/stones?

For higher end pieces I would consider consigning with Pearlman''s or an estate jeweler.

and I see no reason to give someone 25-40% of what you receive, which is already going to be a haircut from what you paid just for putting a picture on a website and sending it out if you feel comfortable dealing with people in your own. Right now there is a Leon Mege and a Mark Morrell ring on DB, as well as a 10k diamond tennis necklace and other assorted items.

Others are allowed to give opinions on this too ya know. I am giving him other options, and he asked for options, and the reason for potentially paying someone else a part of the price is that not everyone trusts dealing with individuals, thus a dealer can potentially command a higher price than you could get on your own, and also many of these vendors have a wider audience for showcasing high end pieces.

There are 4 basic reasons I can think of right away to pay a commission on your sales.

1) Dealers may have better access to customers than you. Most people start and end their jewelry search at the dealers. This is for a variety of reasons that range from advertising to convenience to the ability to offer warranties and ongoing support but it remains true that 90%+ of the fine jewelry business is conducted in what you would call a jewelry dealer. Assuming that you don’t own a store yourself, the only way to access this marketplace is by paying off someone else who does.

2) Jewelers, at least good ones, bring to bear some skills that are often helpful. This can include things like how to advertise, display and present things attractively, what repairs should be done and what should be left alone as well as how to do them. They provide a convenient and secure place for the transaction to occur and they are adding their own credibility to the deal, which is often the tipping point for buyers.

3) They do some or even most of the work. Many people find the whole sales process to be pure torture while others find it to be a fun game. Meeting with strangers, having them lowball and disparage your goods while you talk them up can be both frustrating and time consuming and it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Hiring out this chore to someone else can be money well spent.

4) They might be better at it than you. Getting 75% of their sales figure may actually result in more money to you than 100% of what you’ll get by doing it yourself through craigslist, ebay or even your own jewelry store if you have one. Not every item is well suited to every marketplace, and not every dealer does well with every type of merchandise.

Commission brokerage services are not appropriate in every situation but there are definite cases where they are. Summarily dismissing sales people because they charge for their services is missing a huge opportunity. Some aren’t worth what they cost, but some are. Cheaper service isn’t always better and ‘free’ can sometimes be the most expensive of all.
