Hello,

I hope this is in the correct forum, if not, I sincerely apologize.

My girlfriend and I have been together for seven years and we really want to get engaged this summer. She knows everything about the type of ring she wants but we are having trouble finding it in jewelry stores and I have a few questions on whether or not it is even possible.

I have the diamond from her grandmother that she wants to use for her engagement ring, but she wants a bezel setting on a thin platinum band. Example: http://www.brilliantearth.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Luna-Ring.jpg

Like I said, we are having problems finding anyone that even carries bezel rings, let alone anyone who is willing to put the diamond in that type of setting without charging us another $3,000. My main question being, is it possible for me to purchase a platinum bezel setting and bring it to a jeweler with my diamond and have them place it into the setting? I keep finding contradictory information, with some saying you just have to get a bezel big//small enough for the diamond, and some saying that bezel settings must be made specifically for your ring(hence the extra cost since the jeweler is "customizing" your ring).

Thank you so much for your help!

This thread might give you some ideas:

I love my bezel-set three-stone ring, but it was made by James Meyer, who unfortunately is now only making jewelry using stones from his inventory, or that he sources.

Stuller also carries bezel ring settings - many jewelers can access order Stuller settings and set the stone for you. You haven't mentioned though what shape and size your diamond is. It's possible that the Stuller settings are only available for certain calibrated size stones, or that they might be a little thicker than you might like if they're sized to accomodate a range of diameters.

The best approach for me was to take my stone to a local jeweler and have him design the bezel ring I wanted (a double bezel, but fairly simple).

The PriceScope vendors I contact were great, but their costs were all several hundred dollars higher than going local (I live in a low cost area of the country). I also liked being able to tweak the design sitting across a desk from the jeweler - normally I prefer to do everything online and over email, but I was glad to be able to fine tune proportions in real time.

A good jeweler with a good bench should be able to do it.

They can order the setting from Stullers.

This ring should cost no wear near $3k. This is probably the cheapest way to get it but if you have the funds I would be more
apt to go with Brian Gavin or David Klass. That way you can make any changes you want.

Oh, and to address your question: you won't be able to buy a bezel setting online and have your jeweler pop your diamond into it. Bezels need to be somewhat customized, or ordered in the correct size and then fitted perfectly, for your diamond. If you have a diamond that's a typical size (like .50, .75, 1.00, etc.), your jeweler should be able to order a setting like the one posted from Stuller, and have it fit fairly well. But I think you will be better off sending your stone to Whiteflash, Brian Gavin, etc. to have them set it for your in one of their beautiful settings.

Stullers's 3C program enables you (more accurately, since Stuller doesn't deal with retail consumers, your jeweler) to order the head,be it pronged or bezeled, in precisely the size needed for your stone for a number of its mountings; I've been happy with the several colored gems (none of which were calibrated or stock sizes) I've had set into Stuller mountings, and the prices are very reasonable for the quality, unless the jeweler tacks on a high mark-up; Stuller does not dictate the final price you are charged.

That said, the skill of the bench who sets the stone is key; fine, even bezels are not easy to master, so you want to see examples of a local bench's bezel work whether you are contemplating a Stuller mounting or "from scratch" custom piece from a jeweler.

I too am a huge fan of Sholdt's Lola, so it would be my first choice for you. Brian Gavin is but one of Sholdt's retailers, if you woul prefer to deliver your stone in person (the stone is sent on, IIRC, to Sholdt for them to craft the ring & set the stone)

p.s. Whiteflash no longer accepts customer stones unless they meet certain criteria:
