I have an acquaintance who is trying to get her grandmother''s eternity ring repaired. The ring is platinum, and apparently she needs to get about 100 prongs retipped and three stones replaced. The cost of repair using platinum is pretty high for her right now, as she''s planning a wedding. They quoted the repair at 2000 using platinum. However, recently she said that she got a new quote from a different jeweler who can retip the prongs and replace the stones for about 400.

I was under the impression that this wouldn''t be a great idea, as white gold (jeweler would use 20K) is softer than PT and has a different look to it. Plus she''ll just have to do it again when the white gold wears down. Is this a respectable means for repairing a platinum ring? Please give me some reasons either way. Thanks!!
