I just posted this on another section of the forum, but this one seems like a more approporiate spot to post it.

I Gave my girl a platinum ring about two weeks ago. We had it resized from a 7 to a 6.

When we got it back, the jeweler had messed up and dropped it from a 7 to a 4.

Now the jeweler (KAY) is up-sizing it back from a 4 to a 6. My question is, what problems do you folks forsee with this large of a change...if any?

Thanks,
Brian

Just like having surgery, complications may occur. It ought to be trouble free.

Look for an overly thinned out base of the shank at the bottom of the ring. Look for solder or seams to be showing or worse yet for open seams or cracks where a small piece of metal has been put back to go from 4 to 6.

The thinness and the degree of visibility of this alteration is mostly what can go wrong. Also be certain the diamond is tight in its pronges BEFORE you wear it or leave the counter.....In other words, BEFORE you put it on a finger, look at it from all angles, slowly and cautiuosly. Try to see the ring fully and any sign of out of roundness or irregularity.

If the job was done right, you'll see nothing or next to nothing. It can be done right, so don't worry over it.

If it is not a clean and neat job, say so. Make them look it over and get it corrected. They can do it and they make enough on these things to have it done properly. Be patient in any case. Good work does take time.

That's a bit of a swing... David brings up some "real" interesting things to watch for... A size up or down shouldn't change things much, but three might be reason for concern... Why don't they just replace the ring since it's their error? Are there diamonds set in the band? If so, be very leary because that could have a major effect upon the stability of the setting...

Be sure to review the BBB website and this website for history of this particular jeweler. When the ring returns from the correction, be sure to thoroughly check out all stones, metal, prong settings-(everything) before you leave the store.

I had my ring sized by them & attempted corrections on more than one occasion--the ring still has a faint open line/gap...won't go further on this--just be sure to check the ring out throroughly

thanks for the help guys. they ended up giving me a new ring.
