I would like to get a jeweler''s loupe so that I can easily identify my diamond. Does anybody know what maginification is appropriate? Any suggestions on where to get one? (I live in Manhattan). Is it the same thing as a simple magnify glass?

Thanks!!!

I may be wrong, but I believe a jeweler's loupe is 10 X magnification. I don't have a clue if it's the same as a magnifying lense, but I would imagine it works on much the same principal. You could go to a jewelry store in Manhattan and see if they would sell you one, or just type Jewelers Loupe in your "google" bar and it appears you can buy them by the dozen.

I got mine from I think widgetsupply.com

I have a 10X loupe and it''s great. They also come in 20X and 30X, but probably more than you will need.

I purchased a 10X and a 20X on ebay. I suggest you get a 20X also because you will not be able to see certain things with a 10X that you see with a 20X (e.g. inclusions depending on your clarity; the GIA number, at least on my diamond, can only be read with a 20X). The 30X is a bit overkill, you don't really need it. 20X however is a bit more difficult to focus.

I suggest 10x is the all around loupe for gems and jewelry. 20x is for finding small diamond inclusions and 30x is for reading small laser inscriptions or searching for the very smallest surface blemsihes. Each has its own use, but for novice eyes, the 10x is the standard.
