From National Jeweler Magazine, electronic addition (today):

Rockville, Md.--A dog with a nose for fine stones has turned out to be a real publicity hound after swallowing a diamond worth $20,000 at a Maryland jewelry store.

According to news reports that entertained readers from Washington D.C.''s beltway clear to Australia, a golden retriever named Soli recently gobbled up the 3-carat-plus stone after a diamond dealer fumbled the gem onto the floor of Robert Bernard Jewelers in Rockville, Md.

Store co-owners Robert Rosin and George Kaufmann immediately called a vet, who could only offer them one piece of advice: they had no choice but to wait for Mother Nature to take her course. For three days, the jewelers'' business revolved around that of the dog.

"It was not pleasant," Kaufmann said, according to an Associated Press report. "I followed him. I had to pick up his stuff. I went through the things. I can understand what it was like in the old Gold Rush because I felt like I had just hit pay dirt."

Once retrieved, the gem was returned to the dealer.

LMAO!

My BF sent me this story last week as we''re in MD where it happened. He said the story should have been called "Diamond in the Ruff". LOL

Would anyone be willing to buy this diamond now, knowing what it''s been through?

"Whad''ya mean "look in the dog"?

I hope the guy doesn't tell his girl when presenting the ring.

I heard it dropped five color grades.

LOL. I think I would have taken out a short-term insurance policy on the dog.

Funny story...
but a 3+ carat for only $20,000 ???
That price seems pretty low. I wonder what the specs are on that diamond...

When I read this all I could think about was the fact that there are people on PS who don''t want to buy a diamond that is someone else''s trade in for upgrade - and, which is preferable - used diamond or one that has been through a dog''s digestive system?

LOL!

After that puppy, ah er, I mean diamond, has been boiled in acid, it wont make any difference where it was before.

Every few years I have my color master set boiled to remove the tiny bits of tweezers that rubs off on the bruted girdles. That acid leaves nothing behind, especially nothing so easily destroyed as organic fecal matter.

Besides, there is a certain romance to the story that will only grow with years.

Wink

ewww.. I think my feelings towards my stone would be forever changed!

Todd,
About 25 years ago a robber held up a store here in town....the police responded and there was a chase, the local news showed the jeweler walking along the highway because the robber was tossing stuff during the chase.....he recovered a surprising amount except for a 3 ct. round the jeweler insisted was taken.
Well, they did catch the robber and they locked him up in jail with a bucket and guess what.....3 days later a diamond!
