I apologize if this is not in the right place, I am new here.
First, a little background: My mother passed away from cancer a little over year ago and before she did, she gave me her grandmother's engagement ring so that I could use the diamond for a ring for my then girlfriend (now fiance). At the beginning of December, I brought the ring to a local jeweler (who shall remain unnamed for now) to have a new ring made using my great-grandmother's diamond. I made it very clear that I wanted the old ring back as it has a great deal of sentimental value to me and that I had planned to give it to my sister.
A few weeks later I got a call from the jeweler saying that the new ring was ready, but that he had somehow misplaced my great-grandmothers ring. He reassured me that he had never lost a piece of jewelery in 19 years in business, and that he had no doubt it would turn up. But until he found it, he offered to take $500 off the new ring until the old one turned up. A couple weeks went by without any word from him so I stopped by one afternoon, and he said he was almost sure he knew that it had fallen behind a particular case, and he just need a contractor to come in and remove the case so he could find the ring. He reassured me it was still on his radar.
Fast forward another several weeks, and still no word. In the meantime, he had the shop shut down for a week for extensive roof renovations. I'm starting to think I'll never see the ring again.
So my question to you all is: What are my options? Where should I go from here? I really want the ring back and the $500 he took off the price of my new ring does not make up for the lost piece in my opinion. I'd gladly pay the $500 to get it back. I have no idea what the real value of the ring is, but the sentimental value is priceless.
Thank you, and sorry for the long story.
Evan
