So I pretty much have my heart set on a specific Scott Kay setting for my gf's engagement ring. But, being the (somewhat) diligent shopper I am, I looked around to see if anything else caught my eye. I entered a fine jewelers store in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania (I'll withhold the name out of respect for the store and the very kind owner), and I browsed some of the settings and after I told the gentleman I was very interested in a Scott Kay setting, he made it clear that they no longer sell the Scott Kay line due to quality issues, unprofessional sevice and delivery problems, etc.
I realize many people have different experiences with the same products from a designer, so I'd like to kind of poll you guys on whether I should be concerned about moving forward with my purchase of a SK setting. Perhaps this was just their way of steering me away from another jeweler? Has anyone had quality issues with SK product that I should be aware of?

I was kind of surprised because I had never really heard anything like that before.

For those that havent seen my other thread with the setting I'm drooling over, here is a pic or two:

That is a gorgeous setting! I have never heard of problems with Scott Kay, but you might want to call Bill Pearlman at Pearlman''s Jewelers (on vendor list under resources) and ask him if he''s ever had problems.

Definitely call Bill. I have never read about any problems with Scott Kay on here. It''s a lovely setting. Let us know what he has to say. Good luck!!

I have a Scott Kay set, and LOVE it. It''s so solid and just gorgeous. I also sent my set back to Scott Kay b/c with the two bands were wearing on each other. They did an incredible job. I have not heard of any problems with the quality of their rings. They seem to be very well made.

Well this is comforting.

I would probably buy anyway and keep my fingers crossed because I am so set on this ring, but its nice to know some of you out there have good experience with his settings.

I probably should have also been tipped off when the gentleman said that his designs are just like everyone elses in the industry, theres nothing exceptional about them. Meanwhile in my head I was thinking, "Gee I thought it was the other way around. I thought his rings are exceptional, so many others in the industry copy them..."
At least that is my feeling on it. I never questioned the artistic value of the settings as I think he is truly talented at designing jewelry.

ditto. if you''re really worried, call Bill. He''s familar with PS and you can tell him several posters told you to call for his opinion. In all my 3 years here I don''t think I''ve ever heard of workmanship issues with Scott Kay, crazydogs rubbing issues is the only one that i know of and SK took care of that for her.

That''s a beautiful ring! I do remember 1 person here had a problem with her SK trellis setting rubbing against the matching ring. She had them soldered together. That''s the only problem I remember reading about here.

Well, in my experience, whenever a jeweler (or any business person, actually) disses something, it''s usually because they don''t have it and/or can''t get it! My humble opinion is that (if the jeweler EVER did carry SK at all) they lost the account for whatever reason, and now there are sour grapes.

Don''t worry about it. It''s a gorgeous setting and I think you''ll be VERY pleased with it.

I have had my Scott Kay set for over a year now, so I will tell you my story.

It took me nine months to find a diamond that met all of my specifications, and over a year to find the setting for it. I searched the internet full time, went to every store within two hundred miles of my state, searched all of the magazines, etc. My jeweler told me a number of times that I would not like platinum because I like my jewelry clean and sparkly, and platinum will look like a coke can in a month or so (i.e. does not have much platinum and does not work with platinum).

I finally found the Scott Kay set after first ignoring it in several stores, because I was looking for something completely different. The minute I put them on my finger I knew I found what I had been looking for. The rings are extremely well made, with both bands made very precise to each other. The craftsmanship of the metal is first class, polished with no burrs. It took just under six weeks for the rings to come in. Scott Kay used F colored, VS stones (nine in all) in the setting because my main stone is an E color. When I called Scott Kay to ask several questions, I was always treated kindly. My jeweler is not a Scott Kay authorized retailer, so I had to order it through an authorized retailer. No problems there either.

Like crazydogs (we have the same set), I just got my rings soldered together. This was done mainly because I never wore the bands seperately, and I was always trying to line them up perfectly. I am so happy that I did this! The platinum still looks shiny bright after over a year of wearing it daily, with no polishing yet. I LOVE my platinum! I am picky, picky, picky when it comes to my rings and diamonds, so I can truthfully tell you that I am very happy with the quality of my Scott Kay. I get compliments on it all the time, and "I" can''t stop looking at it!

The setting you chose is very, very beautiful. I wish you well.

Thank you all for sharing your posts. Looks like I found a weeener!

I think I might have had a similar experience with the jeweler in KoP. They really hate it when you are knowledgeable and know what you love. Scott Kay has gorgeous settings with excellent quality. I go to KoP to look at jewelery and with the exception of Neiman''s, I never actually buy any jewelry there. I left the store in question and told the staff and owner that they made me feel very uncomfortable.
