Jewel Jet Problem? Is this normal?

I got a Jewel Jet for xmas and the push button on top is loose and at first seemed to have NO pressure, just vapors.
Then I did one second pushes in increments, and the steam seamed more pressurized.

How much pressure should be coming out?
Should the top push button ever get loose like that?
How clean do your diamonds get?

Also, it left them wettish with water on them.

Are these things normal? Should I buy from a specific company? This was from some home catalog.

It takes about 3 minutes to get up to pressure. You may just need to wait a minute.
It shouldn''t make any difference where you buy it. They all come off of the same production line.

I waited and it did get pressure after a few minutes. But are the other things normal? (Loose push bar on top? water droplets on rings?)
and how strong should it be - like at the jewelers?

The pushbar is a little bit loose in the design so yes, I would call that normal. The water droplets are less of a problem after it gets warmed up but that’s par for the course as well. Be sure not to overfill it. Clean the piece with a toothbrush and windex or that little bottle of goo they include first and then give it a blast of steam. It works pretty well. You can dry it with a lint free cloth or just let it set and the water will evaporate. By the way, if you use the latter approach, you may start to see waterspots depending on the mineral content of your water. You can solve this by using distilled water in the reservoir.

The ones that jewelers use have quite a bit more pressure, which is why jewelers use them. On the other hand, theirs are industrial ugly, take 20 minutes to warm up and cost $1200.

Thanks so much! So you think I should keep this one from catalog and forget trying another one from ebay?

Also, do you think the one I have (SILVER) is an "older" model maybe? because all I see are red models now.

They’ve been red for a long time and the grey is a relatively new option. I don’t think there’s any difference other than the color of the plastic.

No, I don’t think you’ll gain anything by sending it back and buying another one from somewhere else. There are a couple of other vendors that make competitive products, Gem-Oro comes to mind, but they’re very similar in style and function. Personally I like the Jewel Jet (note of disclaimer: I sell ‘em).

When you run out of that little bottle of cleaner, what do you recommend to replace it? If anything?

Windex, straight out of the bottle. Mr. Clean and water works pretty well too, as does a solution of dishwashing soap and water. By the way, lose that stupid little brush it ships with. A standard toothbrush is far better.

So glad I talked to you Neil. Thanks! I took your advice and didn''t ship it back today. Later on today I tried it again and didn''t put the full 8oz of water in it andit worked really good. Not as good as my jeweler''s (the results) but my diamonds looked cleaner.

So you can clean diamonds with Windex? What do you think of Connossieurs liquid cleaner? (red jar)

My Jewel Jet shoots really strong pressure. So strong I really have to hang out to my ring! Also after it''s done, the ring is spotless and really hot. I have to let my ring cool down before putting it on. I disagree that your unit is functioning normally. I never have water spots or "wet" residue on my ring afterwards.

If you have problems with spotting in your dishwasher that means you should only use distilled water in any steam cleaner.
The water in my place would kill it in a week from the mineral content.

Because of my recent purchase (not received, yet

) I purchased a JJ off eBay. We tried it yesterday.

All I can say is that it''s really surprised me in it''s performance. The steam was very forceful and did a fantastic job with my wife''s other diamond jewelry. Soaked first and then steamed. Even did my wedding band (3 small diamonds w/gold band) and it sparkled for really the first time.

All in all, a very good product.

I use filtered water and it works great. Some of my jewelry has some steam on it but it wipes off just fine. I think the JJ makes my jewelry a bit cleaner than just soaking it in my US (I no longer turn it on after jiggling a few diamonds loose in my rings). The toothbrush I like is a baby toothbrush. It works really well.
