James Allen: Timeless or Thin French Pave?!

Hi All!

I am not entirely sure if this is the right forum but I thought I would try here since y'all know so much about settings!! I originally wanted a petite halo, with either 6 prong or a bezel because I tend to work with my hands a lot and I am clumsy. My BF doesn't like halos and I have heard that unless you spend a good bit, they can be high maintenance. The good part is after seeing quite a few of my guy friends propose with halos, I have decided I don't like them in real life.

However, after looking for some time, I am in love with two settings and wish I could meld them! I have always loved the look of a solitaire but thought they were kind of boring and dangerously high (terrified of catching it on something!) So, enter setting number 1, the "timeless" from James allen. Love the basket and the 6 prongs.

THEN I missed the sparkle of the halo and fell in love with the "thin french pave" also from James Allen.

While I know we can't afford to get a custom ring with both the basket from #1 and the band from #2, I would really love either one. Or, anything he buys. But, he asked for input!

SO, the questions are:
1. Do I really need 6 prongs? I'm a klutz but the thin pave comes in platinum in a price we can afford.
2. The basket on on Timeless is so beautiful but I am worried that 2.1 mm on a squared off band will look bulky.
3. The thin pave LOOKS really tall in the zoomed in photos, does anyone have a profile view of this ring IRL? Also, will a 3/4 ct diamond have a shorter profile because it won't be as tall as the one they are probably showing online?
4. Does anyone have multiple IRL shots of both rings with >1 ct diamonds?

Thank you for any input, your advice is always amazing!

I like minmin's suggestion but if you are definitely going with one of the 2 in your original post, I like the plain 6-prong solitaire better.

That one is out of the budget, sort of. I know it isn't a set-in-stone budget, but I plan to only show him things within the budget he set. I do really love that one though.

To answer your question, no, I don't really have a preference for platinum or WG over the other. I am mainly concerned with the sturdiness. I like that the Thin French is platinum at a price in our budget because from all the posts on PS I have read, that seams like the more durable choice. Please, feel free to correct me if I am wrong!

Thank you both for your answers, it seems like you both prefer the look of the timeless to the Thin French.

I like the looks of the basket on the Timeless a million times more than the french but it seems like it would be chunky looking. This could, in all reality, be because it is so zoomed in on the website and you can really notice the 0.5mm difference in size. Did you try on a few band sizes? Could you tell the difference? None of the maul store near me have anything less than 2.5/3mm.

I like the look of the timeless better.

And I'll tell ya what...over the course of many years here, I have seen some delicate rings. But my vote always goes to the sturdiest, more secure setting you can buy. Doesn't have to be a tank like mine, but a setting that has LESS than can go wrong with it.

E-rings are worn a lot, and it helps when they stand the test of time, not to mention comfortable. ::)

My preference would be the timeless option. I much prefer that basket, actually, as well as the 6 prongs. It just looks ...well..."timeless" in comparison. You can always bling up the sparkle w a diamond WB.

Beautiful! And I do have a prong fixation...but I'm still sticking with my vote for the timeless. I think it would be so amazing with a .10-.15 pointer 7stone WB!! :lickout:

Thanks ladies, great replies!! Making me feel much better about liking the timeless. Another option popped up today when I chatted with the JA rep, http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/Platinum-Double-Claw-Prong-Pave-Set-Diamond-Engagement-Ring.html

Its a unique solitaire, like the timeless but has a similar look to it as the thin french. Are double prongs any safer than 4 prong?

With this one, the diamond is set waaaay too high. The basket just doesn't have good proportions. I honestly think there are better sources of settings.

I have the 6 prong one and I love it so I will pick timeless over french pave

Also one question. When you say we can't afford the setting do you mean we as you and him or just him? If it's just him I'm not sure if you are open to the idea of chip in some money to get your dream setting which is what I did. I'd rather get something I love than settle with something that I can live with but will wonder later on which can end up cost even more if I decide for reset.

I agree that it is set too high! It looks oddly tall.

And the question about me, we, him, he - its all him. He knows that I am willing to chip in but he really doesn't want that. So in this case. "we" is him. He's open about talking about price, design, and all but thinks that an ER is something a guy should buy for his fiance. I know that and know the budget he is looking to stay in, I am just thankful he is asking for my preferences and plan to be respectful of his budget :)

Thanks for the link to IDJ, I haven't really looked there.

Oooh, that does sound pretty!

Yes it does!! :naughty: ... and if you are going to be talking to IDJ about your ering, they are very VERY familiar with 7 stone rings in that range! I have an 8 stone w .12 pointers. Ask for the PS quality for a band like that, usually its F/G w VS /SI uncertified stones. I sure love my ring they made!

Thanks for the advice!
