I am considering putting a 1.5 ct. H&A J diamond in a gorgeous Tacori setting with sapphires. Anyone know how the sapphires will effect the stone? I''m already a little concerned about the color as I''ve yet to see the diamond. (It''s in the mail) Will the extra blue color help hide any traces of yellow in the pavilion or maybe make it worse. Or no effect at all? I''m going crazy waiting for this diamond to arrive!

Hi Bronwen Welcome to Pricescope

Here is a link with several pics of rings with J stones in platinum
you might be surpised how White they look.

Here''s a picture of PreCiouSJeWeL920''s. One''s and E and one''s a J, can you tell which is which?

can you post a picture of the setting? the only way i see color in my stone is if it''s dirty and i have not cleaned it properly and/or from the side of the pavilion. so if you are feeling very sensitive to color (and when i say color i mean a slight warm tinge, not llike it''s bright yellow or anything) then you may want to ensure it''s a setting with a less exposed pavilion, aka i could see someone who has color sensitivities be more secure with a bezel setting or something that didn''t showcase the diamond as a soliltaire from all sides. so the 3 stone with sapphires possibly would detract from any color you might see...

it''s very hard to say for sure, color is VERY subjective, so you just have to wait and see the stone when you get it! good luck.

Thanks for your quick response! I''ve picked this site apart for lower colored stones and have seen some impressive pictures. That''s what convinced me to at least give the J stone a look. There are no photos with sapphires however. I live in Okinawa Japan and was able to find a jewelry store with H&A diamonds. The J color in store lighting looked beautiful to me. As did all the diamonds! I actually preferred the warmth of the J from the top view, and the side view showed ever so slight color when held next to the G. Not enough to bother me at all. My current diamond of 12 years is a average cut .5 I color from Costco. So, I''m not too picky, just want it big and sparkly.

l''m trying to attach a photo. None of them seem to be "legal".

make sure the file has a unique name and is smaller than 100kb.

if you had a regular cut I then a H&A J should be no problem for you to love!

Ooooh, I think I did it.......let''s see if it works. It''s the ring on the bottom.

I think your stone would be beautiful in that setting.

Thanks. I''m kind of hoping the little bit of blue might somehow mask any slight tinge one might see from the side. I just love this settiing. Here in OKinawa the same diamond I am getting runs about $18,000. A 1ct G VS2 H&A was also 18k. It was nice to be able to view the colors and cuts however.

Mrssalvo,

Amazing! I can''t tell the difference!

Yes, the big one looks noticeably warmer than the one flanked by sapphires, so must be the J. And I'm sure in real life the difference is more obvious than in the photo. I've read here though that sapphires might make the white stone even whiter by contrast so maybe the J will look whiter next to sapphires.

My stone is an I, but I think the sapphires are probably too small to influence the color one way or the other.

Ok, here''s another pic she took in different lighting conditions, what about now? i think it also shows how some are sensitive to color and others cannot tell the difference.

honestly to me i can't tell a difference really in either picture...

from almost every well-cut J pic I have seen as well as my real life J..from top down the thing looks pretty blindingly white, if you see any tintage its from the side. keeping it clean is crucial as well.

bronwen,
the setting you chose is beautiful!! i think you will be very happy with the stone and the setting.
.....can''t wait to see what you think!!

Well... those diamonds are graded by humans: it may be that grading is done in weirdly idealistic conditions allright, but it's not like no one could ever see what makes color grades different from one another. Still, whatever differences are there on top of the color chart are slight enough, IMO, to leave it to everyone's choice whether they see anything or not.

If you value 'colorlessness' allot, anything is feasible.

That photo is puzzling to me - I honestly tried to bring out the tell-tale tint via color enhancement and I am still not sure I see anything. If the two stones would be here on the table for me to play with I know I could pick up color - especially that these two are rather large diamonds and the grades far apart (J and E). Between neighbour grades I don't think I could tell no matter what

I was able to pick out F versus H when they were side by side in the store (placed atop a 4-prong platinum setting)-- that F just looked oodles whiter to me. When they were not next to each other, I could no longer discern a difference to ID the color grades of the stones.

Funny, though, when I see this picture, the J seems whiter than the other stone... at least on my monitor.

I'm like you Mara, I can't tell the difference either. I just showed this page to my hubby, who doesn't really know much or care about diamonds

and he picked the J out right away

i just found that really weird, hubby's eyes are sensitve to color

No, cannot tell the difference in the second picture. Obviously the lighting conditions are crucial in telling apart different colors. I'm probably pretty sensitive to color too but i think in stones as far apart as E and J it shouldn't be too hard to tell the difference in most lightings side by side. I looked at E and H side by side just yesterday and couldn't tell the difference but it was under bright Starbucks lights, perhaps under different conditions it would be obvious.

I just love the setting you chose, can''t wait to see the finished product!!!

Thanks everyone. Seems like it really just comes down to personal preference. I personally like all the J stones here and have not seen any differences that matter to me as far as color. I also know I''m not color sensitive. However i do love color on my rings, hence the sapphires I want on it. So, maybe I''m one of those people that prefer the warmer stones. I wish that diamond would just get here already. We are on a military base, so we only get USPS and it takes forever! Oh, Bobswench, do your sapphires look blue most of the time or do they take on a black look a lot? My SIL said hers look black a lot and she does not like hers anymore. Your ring is just gorgeous!

bronwen~

I really like the setting that you have choosen. I think it will really make your diamond pop! A great site worth checking out is www.faycullen.com . You will be able to view several J-O stones in settings with and without sapphires. I think it will give you a great idea on the color.

In the meantime, here is a beautiful M colored stone from that website. If I could swoop it up, I would!

Good luck!

Thank-you for that site. There are some really neat rings there.

The better the sapphire, the more blue you see in low light. If it is still blue in low light (say, under shadow or outside on a cloudy, gray day) or indirect light (say, between you and a white wall, without any light source reaching the stone directly) you''ve quite quite an exceptional piece !

Most sapphire found in jewelry stores is not quite the best. Syntetics (unfortunately) show what sapphire could be at its best

- and look "too good to be true" because of how rare the natural beauties are

Concave faceting (

see here for the source, and a \"before & after\" example ) as those sapphire have helps make the stones brighter and more "blue" in different lighting.

Hope some of this helps

Thank you! I just ordered the matching band from Whitehouse Brothers and I am counting down the days until it gets here! They have some absolutely gorgeous vintage settings so you might want to take a look at their site as well. Although I must say, the Tacori setting you're considering is stunning! Darn keys are sticking on my keyboard.....aw nuts, I'm drooling again.

Those are four natural sapphires and they stay blue in sunlight, indoor, and office light. I haven't noticed how they look in shadows, but truthfully, they're only 2 pts each and it isn't much of an issue either way. With my over 40 eyesight, I'm lucky I can see them at all!
