I''ve been looking for a nice emerald-cut diamond for my girlfriend (and soon to be fiance). Naturally, I want to get the size and cut as nice and as well-proportioned as possible. And I know it may sound tacky but I''d like to wow her with the size (I''m a man afterall!). I haven''t had a great deal of luck but I have found one diamond that appears to tick most boxes: 1.10carat, good ratio & size, nice table & depth ... BUT ... "J color".

Reading your threads, I get a strong impression that anything lower that an H is no good for an emerald cut. I can understand why that might be; they are flatter and thus less forgiving.

However, I also know that my girlfriend likes satin yellow gold & thin shanks. Would a J color stone look better on yellow gold? Or will it all go horribly yellow?

I was going to have the prongs in platinum.

Thoughts/experiences welcome!!

Hi Appleton

J colour if reliably graded can be fine for an EC but you might notice more warmth than you would in a round diamond for example, the size and cut quality can also affect this as well as personal preference and colour perception. Personally I love the delicate warmth that can be seen in these grades and shapes so I would set it myself in YG with white gold or plat prongs if your GF likes yellow gold. Is the diamond with a trusted online vendor or is it in a jewellery store? Also you can use the basic proportions as an initial guide but really if the diamond is online images such as ASET and detailed photos are essential to judge the cut quality and the patterning, do you have any images if online?

You might notice the warmth a bit more from the side view but it won't look in any way yellow particularly if the cut is excellent.

I''ll try and rustle up some images with the vendor.

Meanwhile, I''m glad to hear its not out-of-the question to have a J EC

Thanks

Sounds good, let us know if you can get some images and a J colour EC is definitely not out of the question, it won''t be icy white like the colourless stones but it will still be white with perhaps a hint of warmth in some lights, personally I like this in a stone.

Before I go...

This diamond has clarity VVS2

But I see on the certificate there is a "cloud" on the centre of the table.

Should this cloud be visable to the naked, untrained eye?

Should not be at VVS2 clarity, no harm in checking though but I would think it would not be visible.

like lorelei said, there may be some warmth but it won''t be "yellow" that is unless it is horribly cut. My J EC tends to show more warmth when it is dirty. When it is clean and in 90% of all light I don''t notice the warmth at all. I think the type of metal you set it in will depend on your likes and dislikes. Some people think that yellow gold highlights the warmth while others tend to think that in minimizes it. Personally, I love platinum and the white golds so that is how I set my EC and like I said I very rarely notice the warmth. Really, when I see it is when I tilt the diamond to the side and when it is really dirty. I hope that helps.
