I was on the site for several years before even noticing that there was political talk -- never shows up on the sub-forums I visit. I only saw it occasionally in the most-recent-posts window off to the side. So it seems really easy to avoid political talk here if one is so inclined.

"Banning" political topics is itself a highly political decision, of course. It's like banning any talk of election interference right before an election or banning any talk of viruses during a pandemic.

I think the people who are relieved by this decision share some similarities.

That said, this is an advertising forum disguised as a user group so I expect it to be a little arbitrary.
 
I have never, ever understood being upset over some disagreement on an online forum. And reporting someone else is just a board approved way to be a tattletale. Don't like it?Don't read it! It's not as though the topic is going to chase you around the forum.

I don't care for banning topics, particularly a topic as vague as "politics". There isna lot going on in the world now that is tied in some way to politics. I found Hangout to be a much more interesting place when you could discuss current events...after all, it is an election year in the USA. And so I will come around less.

I feel the same way and agree with probably coming around less @doberman . I was hoping someone knew of another forum where we could go to discuss politics since I genuinely like the people here.
 
I am sad that the discussions are banned. It brought a flavorful complexity to this forum that made this place attractive to me. Disparate opinion under the umbrella of a common thread. Truly unique. I have always tried to be respectful of everyone's opinion and I never felt any personal animosity toward anyone. I like to bandy ideas. I have always lived in a world of discourse and it could get 'singe your eyebrows' heated, but in the end it is great to hear and process another's perspective. I want to hear/read what they have to say and more importantly, the why of what they say. I think it does a disservice to the interesting varied people who frequent here. We're living in a momentous albeit fractious time in history and the lenses we use to view it are invaluable for posterity, if nothing else.
 
I'm happy about it; Hangout was always a place that I got to enjoy some banter, but so many threads were political that I just stayed in CS and gave my humble opinion when it was requested. I've not been here as much as before, however I envision the threads here will become much more relaxed and I'll be participating in HO threads more often again.

Whilst I agree with the sentiment of don’t like it, don’t read it, I did read some of the posts. As I said before, it’s not my politics as I’m not in the U.S., but I have to say that some of the comments and the personal attacks I found unkind and unnecessary. Which leads me to your first comment, whilst the opinion of strangers shouldn’t matter, when people are criticising you or attacking you personally, I think a lot of people would find it hard not to be upset.

For the most part the criticisms were toward policy or politicians. I only saw one person be rude; she called DF a troll. For my part I promptly corrected her, as did another poster. Meanwhile DF was probably ogling all his beautiful diamonds and planning his next Chanel purse purchase for his wife :lol: I seriously doubt that he was upset. I think that people online have a tendency to make things about them - as an example, if I don't like your candidates policies, and I think he's stupid, that does not mean that I dont like you and I think you're stupid, but people tend to read it that way .

I don't get upset when it comes to talking politics. Heck, most of my close friends are Dems but we still go out to have lunch and coffee at least 3X a week. My brother is a far left liberal he is the biggest Trump hater on earth but I still love him.

Yesterday I went looking for political forums to maybe participate in. I just put "Political Forums " in the search engine and scanned the top one. I was so surprised that people were nice. One guy has a confederate flag as his avatar, but the liberals like him. One person, a gal, posts comments that the others make fun of in such a nice way, it makes you smile. And their memes are labeled something like may be disturbing, but it wasn't that. They are funny. For example-- Who wears this dress better?
A picture of Melania Trump and Fidel Castro. Shows the military dress that Melania wore for her speech.

What is hard to accept is that these people know each other and have fun critiquing each other.. I will miss not knowing the people for a while. But I'm willing to try elsewhere

The tattletailers won this round. Admin doesn't have to put up with a bunch of crybabies. OH, I said it again. DF, I do like you. Who wouldn't like a man who loves taking care of his beautiful grandchildren. Can't beat that.

@smitcompton , I may join this other forum too. It will feel strange as PS is the only online forum I’ve ever participated in. It would be nice if others here who enjoyed the political forum did as well. I learned a lot here and really enjoyed hearing others opinions.

Exactly. The best boss I ever had was a Trump supporter - we got along great even though we all know how I feel about that candidate. I will never make the mistake of assuming someone is a bad human just because their politics differs from mine, unless I find them marching in a white power rally or they spew racist drivel.

DF I expect to see more Chanel purses at some point. I like to live vicariously :lol:
