I''ve heard that EGL is soft on grading, but wow!

So, I purchased a diamond from a local store a couple weeks ago. I basically got the diamond at online pricing and although the stone is EGL graded, I made the assumption that color would be off one or two grades and that some of the other grading my be slightly off.

I had an independent appraisal from one of the pricescope recommended appraisers today.

EGL stats: Independent Appraisal Stats:

1.76 carats 1.76 carats
7.79 x 7.75 x 4.76 7.75 x 8.05 x 4.76
Color: H Color: K
Clarity: VS-1 Clarity: VS-2
Polish: Excellent Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Excellent Symmetry: Very Good
Girdle: Thin Girdle: Medium - Sl. Thick
Fluor: None Fluor: Faint Blue

HCA: 1.2 HCA(w/Sarin): 1.8

The one that really bothers me is the 3 grade difference in color. The appraiser said that the diamond does appear slightly whiter due to the fluorescence.
They said that the clarity was just because of the location of the inclusions (the two plots looked very similar).
While the symmetry was downgraded to very good, they told me that the ASET picture was one of the best to show the arrows since they started adding them to their reports.
The downgrade in the HCA doesn''t really bother me since it is still below 2.

All this being said, visually I still really like the diamond. I am just wondering if I overpaid. I''m still within the return period.

I paid $10,125. From my brief search through pricescope venders, I seem to be in the ballpark as far as price for such a diamond. Am I missing something? Can I get comparable quality diamond with I or J color for a similar price?

I think you should go back to the jeweler and try to negotiate a discount based on the color discrepancy at the least. There are some major price differences between an H and a K.

Seriously, is that even the same diamond as on the cert??? Nothing is the same but the carat weight and the depth.

The diamond is laser inscribed, so it''s definitely the same diamond. But yeah, very few things on the cert went unchanged.

Personally i would return the stone and start over...any jeweler that cant tell the differance between k & h may not be the best place to buy...they should have seen the color difference when showing you the stone in the beginning and questioned the certification.

When we''d narrowed down the search, she showed me 3 stones that were all "I or H" color...and this one was the whitest of the 3.

Whiteflsh has an ACA (AGS ideal) for $9640 and it's a 1.706 K VS2. It's a beautiful stone in your budget.

They have a 1.723 H VS2 for $17,900. So you can see H to a K is significant price-wise.

If you love your stone, keep it and don't worry about the paperwork. If the specs will annoy you return it and find an AGS or GIA stone.

If the stone you already have looks good to you and it's really a K, why not buy a WF K that is ideal on cut, polish and symmetry? (and will be accurate on the grading)

I''m confused by such a large discrepancy in the size. 7.75 to 8.05 isn''t normal from what I know. Neither is the 3 color grade difference. Hoping an expert can chime at least on the size issue.

7.79 to 8.05. I am not an expert but if the stone is oval then it all matters where you measure from and if they are actually finding the widest diameter. Experts??

Wow, if you can handle K color, then I''d faaaar rather have an ACA! And it costs less, too!

If you want to go to J color, you can still get a 1.5 in the $10,000 range. (ACA''s are 5% less than the list price if you pay by wire and are a PS member).

For the $ I personally would MUCH rather have an ACA stone that is cut perfectly, with a lifetime upgrade policy to boot.

If it was EGL Israel then the clarity is very strict and close.

Me too. Nick, if you have the cash flow or credit available to swing it (and enough time left on the return policy on the first stone) I would order the WF stone so you can compare the 2 side by side. If the WF K looks as white as what you have now, I would go with the WF stone because of the better cut and great upgrade policy.

PLEASE get the ACA - if not for the colour, at least for the cut.
And I would feel nervous buying from a vendor who clearly has no clue - I dread to think what the other "I'' oh H''s"" were if your K looked the best - L? M?
sheesh..
I also feel sorry for other customers buying here who don''t have the knowledge to get an appraisal done - Think how many women could potentially be walking around showing off their pure D diamond, which is really H

Please let us know what the jeweller says when you confront them with this..
