Hello everyone,

I have been using the educational resources on here and realize that I had it all wrong. I was focusing on carat, color and clarity and paying no attention to cut. I understand now that cut is the most important factor in buying a diamond. I am on the market for a round diamond and I had a few questions about what I learned so far: 1) is excellent the only cut worth buying, or can very good be ok (price concerns)? 2) why does depth and table have to be in the 60-62% and 54-57% range? 3) why does crown angle and pavillion angle have to be in 34-35 and 40.6-41 degree range? 4) how do I make a 1 carat diamond look bigger (is it depth and table or crown and pavillion that make a diamond look bigger)? I look foraward to your responses and my continued education.

Thank you,

Belkis

Welcome!

Your questions about cut and proportions are best asnwered with a little reading. Start here: https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/diamond-cut

GIA Excellent and AGS0 c ut grades are safest. You can find GIA VG cuts that are still awesome performers, but it is difficult. I personally would only buy GIA Ex or AGS0 in a modern round brilliant. It is absolutely worth spending the money on an ideally proportioned diamond. It will be brighter, sparkle more, catch more attention (yours and others).

Focus on the best cut not the biggest spread. The best way to make your money go further and get a bigger stone is to look for lower clarity or color. YOu can also choose setting that enhances the size of your stone, like a bezel or halo style. I really do not suggest trying to get the "biggest 1ct" or spreadiest 1ct, because you will be making compromises in cut quality for a not perceptible difference in size -- at best such comrpomise will buy you .1mm or thereabouts. Much better to set the diamond in a way that maximizes coverage or to lower clarity or color if carat is your most important C.

It depends on your budget...

Read through this thread (ignore the first two stones I link to, focus on the rest of the thread, click on the links) https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/what-is-this.179549/

Gypsy,

I read through the thread and it looked lke you were having fun finding bad stones. I guess its excellent cut or nothing, huh? Thanks for the continued education.

I was having fun. But on page two there are some wonktastic excellents and even a wonky AGS0. So whatever you do. Run the numbers through the HCA. If you are working with a vendor that will provide IS images you can go under 3 with an IS. If you are looking at vendors without IS then under 2 is where you need to be.

I don't know if Eternity provides Idealscope images or not. JA and Pearlmans will work together just fine. But I would personally call Julian at Pearlmans up and tell him PS sent you and that you want a stone with PS quality cut, and I or better and eyeclean-- what size you want-- and with that setting. And see what he can find you. He's one of my favorite PS vendor sales people and is great at working with budgets. He'll discount that setting for you too.

You mentioned a bezel or halo setting would enhance the stone. What do you think about this setting? I am madly in love with it, but wanted you opionion. http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com/jewelry-designers/beverley-k-jewelry/rings/77PP1/

I love Beverley K and Pearlman's! Bill and Julian have been wonderful to work with! I would absolutely tell them you want a GIA Excellent or AGS Ideal cut diamond. Be sure to tell them you are a Pricescope member because you will get a discount!

Gypsy,

I am going to follow your advice, but wanted to know about your experience with Julian. I assume he is trustworthy. Do I need to get the ring appraised once I get it from Pearlmans?

Gypsy,

I am getting closer to the buy date, December 15, and I decided to follow your lead and call Julian. I think I will wait till the first week in November and let him know I need it for Dec 15th. I just want to make sure he is trustworthy? I have not heard anything negative on the board, but I am nervous.

I don't think Gypsy has seen this but if you go through her posts you know she highly recommends Pearlman's over and over! :) I would be comfortable ordering from them!
