Am I an idiot for buying a stone with what the rep says is a "tiny, tiny" chip in it on the pavillion side near the girdle? I''m really having second thoughts but it''s a beautiful diamond otherwise and I just need to know if I''m making a mistake. This is my third post asking for help - please chime in!!!!!

You need to take it to a qualified independant appraiser who can tell you whether or not this may compromise the integrity of the stone long term. Take that into consideration before giving it a permanent home.

I am not an expert but I''m going to give this a BUMP for you so hopefully you''ll get some responses.

You''re an idiot for buying it if you can''t return it after it''s appraised! I would under no circumstances buy a stone like this unless you can get it INDEPENDENTLY (i.e., someone who does NOT sell jewelry) appraised first.

I agree with the previous comments about being able to return it if you are not satisfied with an independent appraisal.

That aside, are you certain you can be happy with this stone in the long term, knowing the chip is there? If you are, then that''s great (and hopefully you can save loads of money on an otherwise lovely stone). If not...

If you think you might want to trade up your stone one day, you might have a harder time selling this diamond than one without a tiny chip in it - so this might be worth considering.

This is what I was going to say. Get it independently appraised when you get it and then after that I would decide whether I would keep it or not. I hope that there''s a good return policy on it though. That would be the only way though that I would ever buy one with a chip without seeing it. Also it depends as Cleo said, about whether it would bother you or not.

More info is needed: Was the chip considered in the diamond''s grading? If so, what is the girdle description (VTN/XTN?). Is is part of the clarity grade? If so, what is that grade? Tiny nicks and pits can be polish features. There is a borderline where a nick/pit becomes a chip and it becomes a clarity characteristic. This can be microscopic and a nick/pit/chip at a facet junction that was there following the cutting process is entirely different than the oft-frightening “chip in my diamond”

we hear about after the diamond was sold, it was worn, got knocked against something and the girdle fractured along a cleavage plane.

Also, if this is an AGS or GIA document - and the chip is noted on the report - the diamond cannot have a top cut grade if it''s problematic. Both labs take durability into account. Is there a cut grade?

Many times what someone describes as a "chip" in the pavilion is a partial nick in the lower part of the girdle which does not actually break the girdle outline. Sometimes such a "chip" is a small cavity below the girdle residing in a pavilion facet. Both of these situations are not really huge problems, but the fact that it is there makes it essential to verify exactly what is going on. It was good of the seller to advise you. It is definitely best for you to check it out before committing to the stone. Occasionally, a seller does not give full disclosure and once you own it, it is partly your fault for not doing your homework.

a big thank you to everyone who replied. obviously, this is a huge decision and I''m feeling the pressure! it helps to be able to come to the forum and get great advice.

so... yes I will be having it appraised independently first - thanks to all who suggested it - I clearly wasn''t thinking straight and forgot all about this option. and, since I''m purchasing from a trusted pricescope vendor I''m assured of the return policy.

the idea of the chip doesn''t bother me as long as I can''t see it. I''m a practical girl and figure that over the next 20-50 years of wearing this ring it''ll probably get some minor dings along the way. eye-clean is fine, I don''t need mind clean. my only concern is the structural integrity of the stone, and maybe, possibly, someday in the distant future... the ability to upgrade if I were to decide to do that (I''ve read enough about DSS to know it exists and I may get infected!
