Is this really true? "Well cut stones over 2 carats are hard to find"

Another PSer made this comment in an old thread. I''ve never heard this before. Is this true?

Absolutely not.

For a price, you can find/buy almost anything.

No, not at all. Sometimes the online "virtual inventory" of large stones is slim for well cut stones however that isn''t always the case. And when I think of the harder sizes to find online they are usually over 4ct stones. 2ct well cut stones there usually seems to be a fair amount of inventory at any given time althought I''m not sure how you would "measure" that.

Are you asking for a particular reason?

I think it depends. When I was looking, none of the vendors had the specs I was looking for which was at least an H color, VS2, 2.50-2.75ct. There were a few that were close but either the color or clarity were lower. I winded up with a G color, VS2 2.52 ct through WF who provided a sarin and idealscope image. The stone is a winner.

If someone''s not set on a specific set of specs, then yeah, they can find a true top cut H&A. But from what I''ve noticed, the vendors here don''t often carry high color, high clarity and high carat in H&A''s.

The more flexible your specs are the easier it will be to find a stone in any size.

Just because I found it enlightening... here''s John Pollard''s response to a similar question in 2005:

On that note, some of our customers ask why it''s difficult to find ideal or superideal diamonds in large (3ct+) sized. The answer is the same one as why most diamonds on the world market are cut to average quality - you can save weight if you don''t shoot for precise numbers and fine-tune the diamond. Would a cutter polish a diamond into a superideal, AGS0 H&A at a finished weight of 3.88 carats when he could have a decent/average diamond at 4.02? No way. Those pieces of rough are too rare NOT to get that 4ct yield, and most buyers are not aware of the difference in cut quality anyway.

Ditto PPs - I can see someone having troubles at 4ct without working with a vendor with direct access to a cutter, but I don''t think 2cts would be a problem for anyone not stuck on 2.48 F VVS2..
