Is this really a VS1?

It is VS1 grade based on the GIA cert. It may not be the best looking VS1 comparing it to other VS1 graded diamonds in the market.
 
It can have inclusions and still be VS1 - depends on how visible the inclusions are w/ a loupe vs. the eye. Different labs have different grading standards too...
 
Inclusion plot just shows where the inclusions are not how big or extensive they are. It can still be VS1 if all the grade setting needles are only VS1 or smaller inclusions.
 
I am still a little confused. When I see this inclusion plot compared to others rated VS1, it has a lot more inclusions. It also has a lot more inclusions than some rated SI1.

If there were two diamonds with the same inclusion plots, but one is graded VS1 and the other I1, does that mean the inclusions on the VS1 are smaller and not noticable to the untrianed eye and the I1 inclusions are visable?
 
VS1 inclusions are much smaller than I1 and SI1 inclusions and should not be able to see anything with the naked eye on VS1
 
If it''s graded VS1, then the inclusions shouldn''t be visable to the naked eye.

That said, the plot is comparable to one of my SI1s (AGS graded) and it''s entirely eye clean. . .but, as the clarity rating is lower, I paid A LOT less than a VS1. Oh, and FWIW, I have a VS2 that has only two tiny dots. It would bug me to spend $12K on a stone with a messy plot.
 
I agree with you MC. I think it bugs me too much with all of the inclusions on the plot that I will pass it up and keep searching.

The clarity grade is influenced by various factors including but not limited to size, colour, location, amount and type of inclusion/s, whether that particular diamond is a " high" VS1 or " low" VS1 etc. The inclusions will vary between diamond to diamond, so some clarity plots can look cleaner than others, the plots aren't meant to give the buyer any indication that a diamond is eyeclean or not, however the majority of VS1 will be eyeclean to most people. Unless you are a client of one of the vendors here that can pick out VS inclusions across a desk!

Conversely many I1's won't be eyeclean, however there are exceptions. I own 2 I1's and was able to see a totally eyeclean I1 Infinity recently, it took me ages to find the inclusion even with a loupe and even then it had to be pointed out to me!
 
i have always found clarity grading the most difficult to understand. It often seems inconsistent. I have a vs2 Ec that was cleaner than the vs1''s i was looking at....
 
If the inclusions are all colorless that diamond can be an eye-clean VS1. If those crystals were black the diamond would not be eye-clean nor a VS.

When they plot the diamond they try to make the size of the inclusions in the plot match the size in the diamond.

Inclusions are graded by five factors- size, nature, relief, number and position. I suspect that even though there are a lot of inclusions in the stone, they are very minor in appearance. Very small inclusions are hard to plot. Have the stone looked at by an independent appraiser before you seal the deal.
