I have searched and searched settings, so maybe what I''m looking for isn''t even possible. I am likely replacing my destroyed oval stone, with a similar oval stone (between 1.5 and 1.7 carats, about 9x6mm). I have 2 round sapphires that I would like set on either side of the stone (about 4mm each, unsure of the exact weight, probably about .3 carats).

I have a 4mm wide wedding band that I plan to have split into 2 - 2mm bands, to wear on either side of the diamond/sapphire ring. I want them to all sit flush, without any weird bending of the bands going on.

Is it even possible to have the 3 stones set so that they''re on the top of the ring, without prongs coming out too low? Or, do I need to give up and come up with another idea?

no problem on the 3 stone that can fit the side bands...
splitting the current ring isnt that hot an idea.. 2 2mm bands is a better idea...

Why isn''t splitting the band a good idea? I went to a jeweler that I trust to ask about having the dome filed down, because I have always hated the high dome. (We were only engaged 5 days; I really should have spent a little more time picking a wedding band. LOL) The jeweler suggested it to me. Honestly, the idea appealed to me, but I would love to know the downside of it.

a 4mm wont cut down into 2 2mm bands...
cutting then polishing it flat is going to take away a bit of material.
lots of labor for little gain.
not too mention the skill needed too pull it off properly.....

I agree with storm on both points. lots of 3 stone settings out there that will allow for wedding bands to sit flush. I also agree that cutting your current band seems like a lot of trouble. I''d just keep it as is and get a band or 2 new one''s you want to wear with your new ring.

Would somebody please link to a 3 stone that would allow a band to sit flush?

All I have seen either have low baskets that protrude or a trellis like prong creation that sticks out.

Also, to clarify, it''s not a matter of preserving the structural integrity of the band as to not splitting it, right? I don''t care, if the bands end up smaller than 2mm. I just want thinner bands, without the crazy high dome. It probably would be cheaper to buy a new band or two than to have all the labor done. But, it is a sentimental piece. I think my dh''s feelings get a little hurt that I don''t wear my original band anymore. I thought this way we could both be happy, if I just alter the band to suit my tastes.
