Hi guys. I found an emerald cut diamond and have been TOLD by the vendor it is eye clean. I'm still a little concerned, and never can tell from the pictures what is and isn't. If it IS, it's a really great deal. If it isn't, I think the inclusion is big enough to have me pass on it.

Sorry if this picture is gigantic!

How many carats is the diamond?

It's 1.09

You have to realize that the picture is extremely magnified! When the vendor has the stone in hand and tells you that it's eye clean, they're looking at the stone and are telling you that based on what they see. Is this James Allen? If so, I would trust them, they tend to be honest with the clarity of stones. That tiny speck will unlikely be seen in real life. What's the clarity on this stone on the report?

Eye clean from how far away? 12 inches? 6 inches? How eagle eyed are you? Did the lab memo grade this as a VS2 or SI1? My gut says it is likely to be eye visible for me but I am also eagle eyed. The fact that the inclusion is dark makes it easier to pick out compared to one that is whitish.

Not James Allen. I actually first found the diamond on Blue Nile, and after a little research found it on another site that had it cheaper and ordered it in and took the picture for me.

It's VS2. They told me it was eye clean, but I had one of the guys at truth about diamonds tell me they "doubted" it was. So I'm really not sure!

That's what I'm worried about.. how dark it is. It's VS2. I don't know how sensitive I am, but I know how important clarity is in an emerald cut. I think if the inclusion was obvious, it would definitely bother me.

Does the place you got it from have a good return policy? When are you going to get it?

Can you resize the original picture down to 6 x 4 mm or whatever it's actual size is and see if you can still see the spot. It's not foolproof because diamonds are not 2D but it's better than nothing. Is the grading from GIA or EGL or some other lab? Does the vendor have a generous return policy for you to order the stone to view in person?

I scaled it down and didn't really notice! But as you said I know it's not foolproof. We haven't decided yet if we will buy the diamond from the vendor who provided the pictures, because I saw it first on Blue Nile and really like a setting they carry. So, BNs return policy, and this other vendor has a 30 day, minus shipping and insurance.

It's GIA, here are the stats:
Shape Emerald
Carat 1.09
Cut Excellent
Lab GIA
Clarity VS2
Color H
Polish Excellent
Symmetry Very Good
Fluorescence Medium
Table 62
Depth 66.2
Length 7.13
Width 4.91
Height 3.25
Culet None
Girdle Medium to Thick
L/W Ratio 1.452
L/W Ratio Shape Rectangular

It's just over $3500..which SEEMS like a good deal to me. See anything glaringly obvious that I'm not?

once you see the inclusion and know its location, it's probably etched in your head and no longer eye clean when you view the stone. Most people i know of will always see the inclusion there after.

It does seem like a good deal and there's no other red flags shown in the picture (cut as well). At this point, the only thing you can do is to order the stone to see it in person and if necessary, make use of the return policy if the inclusion bugs you too much. Do you have an ASET? I don't think BN does. Does the other vendor who took the picture for you have an ASET? If so, I would request one before ordering the stone.
