Is this diamond set too high?

Does this diamond look like it's set too high? I know that cathedral settings in general are high, but this seems excessively so to me. It might just be a function of a small ring size throwing off proportions - ring is sized to 3.25. I tried to take a picture on a colored background so that you can see the space between the culet and the base of the head, hope its visible. Would lowering it impact the amount of light that gets in?

Would appreciate any thoughts on this as I have to decide whether I should send it back to the seller for adjustment.

Also, my local jeweler noticed that there is a tiny chip on one of the small (i.e. less than 3 points) sidestones - is this worth the effort of shipping it back to have the seller replace it? I was told it's only visible under a loupe.

[edit] added a picture of the ring on a finger.

In my opinion, for me, yes. But what really matters is if you like how it's set. I'd be afraid I would forever be knocking it into things - I'm not always super graceful.

It would be much to high "for me". I'd be banging it against everything and would be very afraid of causing damage to the stone. ;(

I am a size 3.25 and don't think that's what is throwing off the proportions. I think that, yes, it is set too high. However, some women prefer a higher set diamond, so it's a personal preference sort of thing. I would also be worried about catching/knocking/banging into things with it.

For me, it would be too high (and I like'em high!!)...

I think the height may be messing with the proportions of the setting. Setting it lower would make it more fluid and pleasing to the eye, IMO. If it bothers you, then it's too high. If not, and you love it, then keep that thang on up there, girl!! ;)) :sun:

...just be careful!! :halo:

Thanks for the advice! Will send it back for resetting.

In my opinion, the diamond is set properly in that setting. However, the setting itself places a diamond that size too high for my liking. So net of net .. it is the setting and not the setting job that is too high.

Absolutely agree with this!

I would return that ring because of the odd head used, and most definitely if a sidestone is chipped. Mounting the diamond lower in a different head will not adversely affect performance of a top-cut diamond. The leaky ones benefit from high settings so that they can get more might in through the pavilion to offset the leakage.

I've attached to examples of similar cathedral settings that crammed larger stones in there and are not skyscrapers. The thicker one with the larger stone is a Roseco cathedral with a Stuller Solstice head. The double-prong head is a Stuller Octet and Roseco cathedral.

I love love LOVE the first setting (6-prong)... do you have the link for it's thread?

The prongs seem really tall to me. Can you get a shorter prong head?

It seems from the length of the prongs that the setting is meant for larger centre stone. If a larger stone is set, the prongs will be pushed out slightly and the stone set lower. Can you get them to shorten the prongs so that the stone isn't set so high?
