Is this diamond set crooked?

_21623.jpg

I think the girdle is crooked or the crown is taller on one side than the other. I straightened up the image and when cropped, the top of the stone is perpendicular to the vertical shank. The 6 prong setting "might" have a little bit of a tip to it, but it looks like the prong length is somewhat different due to the girdle being lower on the right side than the left, while the table seems perfectly horizontal. The pixilation in the enlarged, vertical image allows you to see the relative straightness a bit better than in a normal image. It looks like the diamond is straightly set, but the prong angle on the right is different than on the left due to the placement of the girdle. Of course, I could be wrong, but that is how I see it at this great distance.

Thanks for replying Oldminer. The diamond is a Brian Gavin signature, but was set locally. Can anything be done to correct the slight tilt I see, or is something not right with the diamond? Thanks.

Another picture from the other side. The diamond is a Brian Gavin Hearts and Arrows signature. Is something wrong with the diamond??

Can't tell anything from that picture. You need better photos.

The stone looks like it is slightly tilted. It happens from time to time and can be fixed. You should take it back to the jeweler who set it and ask him to fix it.

Thanks for the reply Wink. I will take it in tomorrow. In fixing the tilt, do I need to ask/insist that a whole new 6 prong setting be used? I just want to make sure it's done right the next time so I don't have issues with other things. Thanks.

If a diamond has a high degree of asymmetry and/or a warped girdle, a setting can look distorted. However, I highly doubt that's the case with a BGD signature diamond. Thus, more likely it was not mounted perfectly.

If you want to take better pictures, this thread has helpful tips:

My apologies about the photos. I took them quickly with my cell phone today. It took me awhile to figure out what I needed to do to get them to post here, so I was just thrilled with that small accomplishment. My thoughts have been that I can't imagine something being wrong with the diamond. It is a Brian Gavin signature hearts and arrows. I noticed the tilt about a day after the diamond was set when I closely inspected the ring. To me, the diamond itself has looked tilted in the setting. The other sides of the diamond that I didn't post pictures of look a little unusual too (higher up on one side and crammed lower on the other, if that makes any sense without pictures). I will take it in tomorrow morning to where I had it set. Does anyone know if the whole six prong setting should be replaced in fixing this? ( I worry that they'll want to use the same prong setting and then it might look at bent and funny.)

Okay, I took the ring in to where the diamond was set. Two sales people and the jeweler confirmed it is tilted, and they can fix it. I have an appointment to take it in to get fixed. I asked the one sales person how something like this is fixed - do they put a new 6 prong setting in?. (I wanted to ask the jeweler myself but was not able to.) The sales person told me "they use the same 6 prong but add some metal to straighten it." Is there anyone that can tell me the correct way to fix a tilted diamond like this? I just want to go back in a couple of days not being completely ignorant of what needs to be done. Thanks.

I am not a bench jeweler so I can not tell you the details, but I can tell you that I have had tilted heads straightened before. Most of which I caught, but also a couple of embarrassing ones that snuck by me. It can be done with your original head, and it can be done correctly, that much I do know.

Thanks Wink. That makes me feel better about this.
